This is one thing that the Orthodox must find rather repulsive.
The Armenian and Coptic Orthodox, in my experience, both use the
pectoral cross as a prominent liturgical feature. The priest processes
around the nave of the church offering his cross to the faithful, who
are eager to kiss it. The cross generally has some large gemstone
in the center where the beam crosses, and is made of gold or other
precious metal.
I suspect it would be impossible for any Orthodox priest to carry
around a cross that looks like Pope Francis' for everyone to venerate.
So how could a pope expect any regard due his authority from such
pastors as these Orthodox who couldn't possibly be impressed with
the appearance of his cross?
