The story I heard was that when they opened his casket in the process of beatification about 25 years ago, the moment the lid came loose a horrific stench filled the entire basilica instantly, far faster than could ever be explained by natural means. People were heading for the exits immediately. They quickly closed the lid but the foul odor persisted for a very long time.
