Pope’s strongman blasts old guard aside

The pontiff is to give more women top jobs and break the grip of Italian cardinals, his key aide tells John Follain in Vatican City

POPE FRANCIS plans to appoint lay women to top jobs in the Vatican and to dilute the power of Italian cardinals in a radical shake-up of the Catholic Church’s government following a series of scandals.

In a move branded as “revolutionary” by Vatican watchers, the Pope last weekend appointed eight cardinals to advise him on the governance and reform of the Curia, the church’s bureaucracy which has been tainted by controversies over child sex abuse by priests, leaks of papal files and allegations of corruption.

In an interview with The Sunday Times, Cardinal Oscar Andres Rodriguez Maradiaga of Honduras, whom Francis named to head the panel and who is now seen as a “power behind the papal throne”, predicted a difficult fight ahead for the Argentine pontiff.

What a joke - this type of thing gets me. As if the Pope should have a difficult time with anything he wants - provided of course what he wants is anti-Catholic. No doubt all those henchmen ie his faithful cardinals and bishops will not want to be accused of any disobedience to the pope by putting up a fight.........they wouldn't fight it anyway because they've been helping promote the whole idea for 30 years already.

    Fr. Wathen snip from 1992:

..........Consider the great outpouring of decrees of nullity of marriages, the ridiculous Pentecostal seances, the use of the most vulgar, raucous music, the introduction of ugly, puerile anti-art, the irreligiousness and crudity of the men and women, who still call themselves religious, the gutting of the churches to the tune of untold millions, while they squall that the Church has never, until now, given a thought to the poor; the total lack of discipline, order, modesty, or common sense in their churches and rituals, the uninterrupted, obsequious fawning over non-Catholic and infidel sectarians, whose own stupidities and prejudices the Conciliar Church accepts as respectable points of view.

And consider that whenever anyone like us calls attention to what everyone can see and no one can deny, that the adherents of this movement, from which absolutely nothing good, not to say truly spiritual, has come, while stopping their ears, flee away shouting: "DISOBEDIENCE! DISOBEDIENCE! YOU MUST OBEY!' For, you understand, in the new order of things, whatever the Pope says, you must agree to, even if what he says is full of fallacies and errors; whatever he does you must admire, even if much that he does is embarassing
(like kissing the tarmac of every airport he lands on), or silly (like riding about in a "Popemobile"), or shameful (like sitting meekly in a great basilica, with television cameras whirring, to be sermonized by a nun-feminist) to the Catholic world. For, you see, the Pope is not the Vicar of Christ anymore; he is simply the High Priest of the Church of the Imbecilic............
"But Peter and the apostles answering, said: We ought to obey God, rather than men." - Acts 5:29

The Highest Principle in the Church: "We are first of all under obedience to God, and only then under obedience to man" - Fr. Hesse

No point getting all vigorous and going places if those places lead straight to hell. Whilst I have no problem with women doing jobs that are not a priest's duty, all we will get with this Pope is a Church which is efficient enemy of Tradition rather than an inefficient one.

  • Mother Angelica type?

Women should not be in leadership roles in the church hierarchy. Period. Running a television station is different. Besides, EWTN is mostly borderline trash anyways. Too much bad mixed in with the odd bit of good.

Quite frankly, I have no idea what Francis is doing. If I did, I might quit my day job.

  • All this complaining about the Vatican, corruption, ineptitude, "gαy mafia," and the need for new faces. A few good women to shake things up might be just what they need.
