  • Get a load of this:

He has visible disdain for the Church's past -- Tradition -- but he is enchanted by a communist "crucifix".

  • While Francis is certainly a leftist, it really isn't fair to pick out single pictures like this and generalize from them.  Whenever the pope (or any public figure) has an event that the press is invited to, they are snapping pictures several times a second.  There will invariably be a few where he has strange facial expressions.

Do these pictures necessarily mean he loves the tiara?  Of  course not.  Neither do yours mean that he hates it.

  • What CathInfo readers might not know is that the papal tiara shown in the photo is a recent gift from the president
    • of (the Republic of) Macedonia.  The lappets (Latin caudae, literally "tails"), are embroidered with the papal coat-of-arms chosen by Francis, faithfully-but-ironically reproducing the mere bishop's miter with which recent Novus Ordo popes have have replaced the traditional triple tiara.

It's special as an object of nationalistic pride, because it's decorated (primarily) with hand-sewn pearls from Lake Ohrid
    • , which is now part of a NW--SE segment of the boundary between Albania and Macedonia.

The lake is arguably a nationalistic symbol, because of its special biology and history:
    · It's 1 of the deepest lakes in Eurasia, thus 1 of the most ancient in the world; and its waters are rich with endemic species (i.e.: globally unique), including the fresh-water mollusk species from which pearls are extracted.
    · Its N.W. shore is the site of the medieval walled city Ohrid
    • , which is overlooked by the historic fortress of Tsar Samuil[sic **] (de facto r. 976--997, tsar 997--1014) of Western Bulgaria, who had made the city his capital.

The grouchy facial expression by Francis is a startlingly rude response to receiving such a gift.  Only he and God know what he's thinking, but I wouldn't be shocked--at all--if it's something like this: "How dare these people insult the "Spirit of Vatican II"--and my publicly professed humility--by giving me a [bleeping] tiara!"   And how uncharitable for Francis to fail to understand that the country had been the southernmost part of "The Former Yugoslavia" (1944--1991), and being part of a Marxist mongrel state, it was probably too busy keeping eyes peeled for Soviet tanks to pay any attention to whether it received any "tiara memos" that "Blessed" Paul VI might've ever sent out.

      -------
Note #: Alas, that Republic has 2 high-ranking national titles that incorporate the word "president".

Note *: The name is transliterated from Cyrillic as «?????» (or HTML «Охрид»), so whether Latinized using 'ch' as "Ochrid", as in earlier 20th-C. sources, or merely 'h', as in more recent sources, either is transliterating the Greek & Cyrillic chi glyph.

      Note **: Cyrillic «Самуил» (or HTML «Самуил»).

In the real world, one often must work with what one already has, not with what one wishes he had, or assumes he might get.

But in what would've been my addendum (had the bits not dried too quickly in my reply), I'd concede that the first-posted photo might've been cherry-picked (olive-picked?) by whatever source publicized it, for its perceived value in making "Mr. Humility" look like an ingrate.

Yes, and it's up to the photographer or photo editor to prevent the latter from "getting out".  Altho' skewing collections of released images--toward the better or the worse--can satisfy certain agendas.

Note #: Consider the presidency of the U.S.A., and campaigns to be elected to that office.  Whatever's the proverbial "sauce for the goose" is often not "sauce for the gander"
