The reception of God’s mercy in dependent upon a person’s acknowledgement of his sins, Pope Francis said Wednesday, because “the proud person is unable to receive forgiveness.”


The last time I checked, forgiveness was dependent in confession on whether the penitent has a firm purpose of amendment, and certainly not just an acknowledgment of his sins.  The most recent discussion of this revolved around whether fear of hell was sufficient for a valid confession.  And, it was determined that fear of hell or punishment(attrition?) was not sufficient, and that a firm purpose of amendment(contrition?) was necessary. The church has thoroughly decided this.  And, here he mentions nothing of even attrition or contrition.  He simply means we must acknowledge our sins and we are forgiven.  The Jєωs acknowledge their sins, but then they swing a chicken over their head.  I wonder what francis thinks about that.  

An important part of Pope Francis' forgiveness theology is for the people to go to confession.
