Reduction ad Hitlerum plays into the hands of those who wish to make the nαzιs the focus of evil in human history. Why on earth one would use such a tactic to defend the bishops in the abuse scandal is beyond me.

Hollingsworth point that they choose the nαzιs rather than other persecutors of Catholic priests is a good one.

What is more, if you have the Oct. issue handy, it displays at the beginning a large, close-up, page height photo of the nαzι propaganda minister haranguing the adoring crowd. The Angelus, apparently, not satisfied that the reader have only the words before him, supplies a prominent visual as well.
