  • Catholics will accept a common date for Easter in East, West, pope says | National Catholic Reporter

This question is for those of you who accept Francis as pope:

If Frankie pulls a Pope Victor I switch-a-roo and accepts a common date of Easter as proposed by the Orthos - will you accept it too?

  • I'm wondering.

Since the dates of the Julian and Gregorian calendars are off by 13 days, how would this work?  After all, Orthodox Easter this year is, according to Google, April 7th and that corresponds to April 20th in the West.  Easter for both sects is on the same day...but not the same date.  I don't understand how the Orthodox Easter could be April 7th because everything I've seen about the Julian calendar says that April 7th is a Monday.

I couldn't tell based on the article if Bergoglio wants the West to celebrate Easter on the same date as the Orthodox or if he wants to celebrate Easter on the same day or, in other words, at the same time as the Orthodox.

    Anyone have a clue?

It is not just the Orthodox, some of the sui juris Catholic Churches use the Julian Calendar too e.g. the Ukrainians in the UK.

This year the Gregorian Calendar has Easter on Sunday, April 20th.  In the Julian Calendar that is Sunday, April 7th (20-13=7).
