He's a self-styled exorcist, a spiritual vigilante who's spent the past 19 years trying to smack Satan into submission.

...AAAAAAnd that is how you end up possessed by the devil. A mere pompous, proud human doesn't "smack satan into submission".

You need the power of God, clothed with Obedience and Humility, in the state of Grace (i.e., not owned by the devil already), to do battle with the devil.

Here is what happens when people take on the devil without being appointed by the Church to do so:

Acts of the Apostles chapter 19:
Quote
13 Now some also of the Jєωιѕн exorcists who went about, attempted to invoke over them that had evil spirits, the name of the Lord Jesus, saying: I conjure you by Jesus, whom Paul preacheth.  14 And there were certain men, seven sons of Sceva, a Jew, a chief priest, that did this  15 But the wicked spirit, answering, said to them: Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?

16 And the man in whom the wicked spirit was, leaping upon them, and mastering them both, prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

Those over 18 can fill in the details of just how the possessed man "mastered" them, and how they were both naked AND wounded...

This is what happens when you mess with the devil! Leave him alone. Self-defense, yes. But we're not Ghostbusters! Leave the professional demon-fighting to PRIESTS who are appointed by the CHURCH, having the shield of OBEDIENCE and a plausible claim of HUMILITY since they didn't take on the task themselves.

This whole thread is filled with superstition. The devil doesn't have the power to control a person's will. This is nonsense.

The guy who told the campfire story above sounds like he has a few French fries missing in his Happy Meal.

What are you talking about?  Sometimes you write as though you have no faith.  While core free will is sacrosanct and cannot be touched by the demons, the fact that demons can strongly influence all other aspects of behavior outside of that is extremely well established by true pre-Vatican-II demonologists.  Curses are real, and they can and do bring an extreme increase in diabolical activity against the target of the curse.  In cases of possession, the demon can take full control over someone's body.  They are capable of making suggestions to one's mind, darkening thoughts, impairing judgment, and pretty much anything besides violating core free will.

Yes, if a person opens himself up to the devil/occult.  Fr Amorth, who was the top exorcist in Rome, wrote a book where he talks about the various degrees of demonic influence, which can happen before/below actual possession.  A person is also open to such attacks from others, if they are in mortal sin.  Pablo openly plays around with mexican witchcraft and "fights" the devil as a layman.  Fr P has been attached to the hip with Pablo for years now.  Why?  There's real danger there.

Any Trad Catholic who scoffs or "laughs" at claims of satanism deserves EVERYTHING they get.

Are we Catholics or not? Do we have the Faith or not? Come on, the devil exists! We can't act and believe exactly the same as atheists who don't believe in God or the supernatural.

And NO, it's not "superstition" to suggest that the devil is real, existing in "the real world". UNFORTUNATELY, HE VERY MUCH EXISTS IN THE REAL WORLD. The Bible and Lives of the Saints aren't just "stories". They took place in the same REAL WORLD that you and I are living and breathing in today.

Either you have the Faith, or you don't. Either you scoff at everything supernatural like Neil Degrasse Tyson or Richard Dawkins, or you don't.

This reminds me of some neo-SSPX priests, like one accordista who reportedly laughed when the Freemasonic infiltration of the Church was brought up. This was a priest who was 100% trained under +Williamson! He KNEW better. But he scoffed when the REALITY of Freemasons was brought up.

I see that you're responding to Yeti also here.  There's nothing "superstitious" about this stuff.  Curses and diabolical activity are very real and respectable pre-V2 demonologists vouch for this.  Just because they can't ultimately alter your free will, it doesn't mean they can't exert a tremendous oppression onto it.

I know this isn't proof of any kind, but to help illustrate how evil can INFLUENCE but not VIOLATE Free Will, read/watch something by a solid Catholic like Tolkien.

The One Ring doesn't violate Free Will, but it has a strong influence on most peoples. You don't "mess" with Sauron or get into a battle of wills with such a strong powerful being. That's how you end up his slave.

Likewise, Catholic teaching says that you don't start talking with the devil. Or, like Saruman (another bad guy in LoTR) he will use his powers of speech to convince you. While he speaks, everything he utters sounds eminently reasonable and good. Anyone who contradicts these words seems like an enemy and a fool. You should read how Tolkien describes his bewitching words -- it's brilliant.
