  • OK, guys.  I am hoping that all of you here at CathInfo can help me.  I have posted the same question on FE with out a single reply.

Over the last 3 years, as I have gone to my diocesan TLM, I have struggled with the status of the SSPX and whiter or not to attend their Masses and were they "schismatic'?  The usual questions people have when they encounter the crisis in the church.

In the process of doing research, I read - multiple times - a letter written in 2002 by Msgr Perl, stating that yes, you could go to an SSPX Mass out of devotion to the TLM - if it was out of devotion to the TLM.  Of course, he had to add the caveat that he couldn't recommend going often, because of the danger of imbibing the "schismatic mindset".  Last point stated that you could give a small contribution.  I am sure that any of you who struggled with the crisis read this letter at one time or another.

BTW- it was this letter that convinced me to at least give the SSPX a try.  I am now going regularly to First Friday Masses every month and will see where it goes from there.  :)

It was an actual scan of the letter - you could see the vatican letterhead and Msgr Perl's signature.

The letter now has disappeared from the internet.  I can not find it and neither can any of my friends who have done research for me.

The reason I am looking for it is I am currently in an argument with someone over the SSPX and I know a Vatican docuмent will be the most convincing.

Someone out there must have saved a copy to their computer or something.

    Please help.

    Thanks.

"ECCLESIA DEI" Pontifical Commission's Msgr Camille Perl
Second Reply to unknown person #1, Sept. 27, 2002

From 15th December 2002 REMNANT Dear Mr. ....... We wish to acknowledge receipt of your letter of 14 August 2002 addressed to His Eminence Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos along with the enclosures. In our letter to you of 7 November 2001 we provided you with important information about the status of the Society of St. Pius X according to the law of the Church and told you that we cannot recommend your frequenting their chapels, but you indicate that you are not satisfied with our responses and have raised three more specific questions. We will deal with them in logical order. 1. In the strict sense you may fulfill your Sunday obligation by attending a Mass celebrated by a priest of the Society of Saint Pius X. 2. We have already told you that we cannot recommend your attendance at such a Mass and have explained the reason why. If your primary reason for attendance at such a Mass were to manifest your desire to separate yourself from communion with the Roman Pontiff those in communion with him, it would be a sin. If your intention is simply to participate in Mass according to the 1962 Missal for the sake of devotion, this would not be a sin. 3. It would seem that a modest contribution to the collection at mass could be justified.... Sincerely yours in Christ, Rev. Msgr. Camille Perl Secretary

  • That is the letter & the best one I have seen so far.  Thank you.

I really wish I could find the whole scanned letter, so the person could see the signature & letterhead, but this may have to do.  I am still hoping to find the photostatic scan.

PS.  Someone on another new forum mentioned you specifically as a person who might be able to find this.
