Constitutions of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest
- Veritatem facientes in caritat -
Making truth in charity
I Introduction?
a — Nature
1 — The Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest is a society of apostolic life, without religious vows, whose members are hierarchically linked to one another by the sacred commitment to strive for priestly perfection while leading a fraternal and communal life in observance of the Constitutions [3].
b — Proper Identity
2 — The Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest, drawing inspiration from the dogmatic constitution Lumen Gentium [4], aims primarily at the glorification of God through the sanctification of priests in the service of the Church and souls, through doctrinal and spiritual formation [5], in view of the mission entrusted to them by Christ in His mystical Body.
3 — The particular end of the Institute is the promulgation, dissemination, and defense, in all aspects of human life, of the reign of Christ Our Lord, Sovereign Priest, way, truth, and life, according to the teaching of the supreme magisterium of the popes and councils [6].
4 — The Institute therefore has as its mission the education of man with a view to the total realization [7]. The priests who are members of this Institute will remember that the full realization of man – eternal beatitude – is obtained only
through the sacrifice of the Divine Redeemer on the cross, which thus inaugurates His kingdom of love and grace. They will therefore focus on preaching the paschal mystery with a view to the realization of the kingdom of God in all spheres
of human life. For this reason, they will be both pastors and preachers, educators and teachers, missionaries. They will promote, to the extent of their possibilities and in accordance with the rules of their constitutions, the harmony between
culture and Christianity [8].
5 — The Institute is dedicated to Christ the King Sovereign Priest: king by virtue of the hypostatic union, as He has power over all creatures, and Sovereign Priest because He commands us not only by right of nature but also by an acquired right, the right of Redeemer (1 Pet 1:18-19; 1 Cor 6:15 and 20).
6 — The Institute acknowledges and venerates as its principal patron the blessed Virgin Mary invoked under the title of her Immaculate Conception, for she bore within herself the Word of God to give Him to the world as the members of the Institute do through their priesthood.
7 — The secondary patrons of the Institute are Saint Francis de Sales, the "pedagogue of love [9]," Saint Thomas Aquinas, the Common Doctor [10], and Saint Benedict who, through his sons, has accomplished the work of evangelization through the liturgy, "source and summit of the Christian life [11]."
c — Realization of the end
8 — The members of the Institute will be convinced that it is by fully exercising their priesthood that they will glorify God and build up His people. To this end, the Institute provides formation for priests in accordance with the prescriptions of the popes, of the councils, and the Code of Canon Law [12].
9 — The Institute shall offer priests the opportunity for spiritual retreats and doctrinal sessions to assist in their ongoing formation aimed at a more fruitful apostolate among their contemporaries and for their personal sanctification [13].
10 — The members of the Institute may engage in parish ministry, serve as pastors, or collaborate with diocesan priests, while respecting the unique charism of the Institute, and this with the prior consent of the diocesan bishop [14].
11 — The Institute may also establish schools and universities in accordance with the law of the Church [15]. It shall engage in evangelization in mission territories by undertaking the responsibility for parishes, missions, as well as the teaching and direction of seminaries, in accordance with the diocesan bishop [16].
12 — For the laity, the Institute shall organize retreats, pilgrimages, sessions, recollections, and congresses in order to expand, in all areas of sacred or secular sciences, the kingdom of God.
13 — The Institute shall have publications for the teaching and defense of truths in the field of faith and morals, and to promote all human and supernatural values of Christian civilization [17].
II — On the governance of the Institute
a — On the supreme moderator and his council
14 — The superiors shall perform their duties in accordance with the norms of the Universal Code of Canon Law and the Constitutions [18].
34 — The members of the Institute shall reside in their house and shall depart only for apostolic reasons or for other legitimate reasons with the permission of their superior: provincial prior or general prior.
III — Admission of candidates and formation of members
35 — The Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest is a clerical society of apostolic life, comprising clerical members or those aspiring to the clerical state. The supreme moderator calls to orders and incardinates into the society according to the norms of canon 731 § 1.
36 — To be admitted to the Institute, one must be Catholic, at least seventeen years of age [34] , and possess the qualities required by universal law and the specific law of the Society. There are also required the qualities specific to the clerical state [35].
37 — Notwithstanding the specific law of the Institute regarding the conferral of orders, the clerical state is obtained only by the reception of the diaconate [36].
38 — The directory of the Institute specifies the mode of formation of the members. Incorporation into the Institute is accomplished through the sacred commitment, expressed publicly before the supreme moderator or his vicar, after one year of probationary formation.
39 — The formula for the sacred commitment is as follows: "Before the Most Holy Trinity and before my superiors, I commit to live in the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest and to respect its Constitutions (for one year). I implore the assistance of Christ the King, the intercession of the Queen of Heaven, and the protection of the patron saints of the Institute."
40 — Non-clerical members shall renew this sacred commitment each year until the reception of the diaconate. The definitive commitment occurs prior to the reception of the diaconate by which the candidate is incorporated into the Society. Each candidate for the clerical state in the Institute is required to complete a year of formation probation before any ecclesiastical studies.
41 — Clerics requesting their incorporation into the Institute shall also undergo a year of formation probation, unless exempted by the supreme moderator. The rules of incardination and excardination shall be applied in accordance with the Code of Canon Law. Other clerics may collaborate in the apostolate of the Institute, with the consent of their ordinary. They will not be incardinated in the Society but will accept its Constitutions. They will be referred to as ‘affiliated members’.
42 — All members of the Institute shall engage in continuing education. The modalities, locations, and times shall be determined by the supreme moderator [37]. In line with the specific charism of the Institute, which is to propagate and defend Christian culture, all members shall, every five years, spend a period outside of apostolic activity at the general house to further deepen their mission, better immerse themselves in the spirit of the Institute, and acquire new knowledge for a more fruitful apostolate and a richer spiritual life [38]. The missionaries of the Institute may participate in sessions appropriate to their vocation in countries of evangelization [39], being aware that they must continually educate and perfect themselves, given the paramount importance of the message of the Gospel [40].
43 — Every member has the possibility to leave the Institute upon the expiration of his temporary commitment, prior to incorporation. The supreme moderator may, before the term, dispense from the commitment [41].
44 — The supreme moderator may, by virtue of canons 693 and 743, permit the departure of a permanently incorporated member. Likewise, he may grant a member of the Institute permission to join another society of apostolic life, with the right of return remaining reserved prior to any definitive incorporation into the new society [42].
45 — Any member of the Institute may be dismissed according to the norms of general law, which will be applied with justice, equity, and charity [43].
IV — Temporal goods and their administration
46 — The supreme moderator, his council, the general treasurer, the provincial priors, the provincial treasurers, and the superiors of the houses will ensure, according to their competence, that Book V "De bonis Ecclesiæ temporalibus" of the Code of Canon Law is faithfully respected.
V — Major Spiritual Orientations of the Members of the Institute
51 — The members of the Institute. The Institute will live according to its own rules, thereby aiming to follow Christ and his Gospel.
52 — The members of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest shall be docile to the Holy Spirit, who communicates through His grace and gifts, the divine spirit from which they have received the outpouring in the very sacrament of their priestly ordination; the spirit of understanding, which "guides them into all truth," leading them to adhere, even to the point of shedding blood if necessary, to the teachings of the supreme Magisterium of the Church; the Holy Spirit who, in proportion to their intimate docility to the Church, will enlighten them internally regarding the mystery of the priesthood, will apply them to the service of Christ as teacher, priest, and king, will make them responsive to the promptings of grace and attentive to the needs of the people of their time, and will enable them to
live the unity of consecration and mission within the Institute [45]. They will often meditate on this word from their divine master: "Go, teach all nations. Baptize them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."
(Mt 28:19) All members of the Institute will feel a missionary spirit towards all peoples, all races, and all nations [46].
53 — The priest reproduces Christ obedient unto death and uniquely represents the Church, the obedient spouse of Christ. He will strive to live out this obedience in ministerial service, in hierarchical communion, and in executing the orders and advice of hierarchical superiors. Thus, through this voluntary and responsible
obedience, Christ will shape the priests of the Institute in his likeness, making them victorious over the disobedience of the multitude and leading them to experience the freedom of the children of God [47].
54 — Since celibacy is a sign and stimulant of pastoral charity, a particular source of spiritual fecundity in the world, the priests of the Institute will live their consecration to Christ in a privileged manner, dedicating themselves exclusively to the service of God and of men [48].
55 — Having the Lord himself as their portion and inheritance, adhering to the Church as to a mother and spouse who are their treasure, they will not hesitate to use their goods only in a just manner and to reject anything that obstructs their mission. Far from attaching their hearts to wealth, they will live in the spirit of voluntary poverty [49].
56 — The virtues of obedience, chastity, and poverty, which the members of the Institute wish to live by, shall be supported by the greatest of virtues: charity. They will often meditate on the motto of the Institute: "Veritatem facientes in caritate." (1 Cor 13)
57 — The Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest, being a society of apostolic life, will practice the concrete modalities of community life according to the directory. However, the constitutions aim to specify some norms regarding the life of communal prayer and the holy liturgy.
58 — In all the houses of the Institute, the four parts of the Breviary will be recited together: Lauds, Sext, Vespers, Compline. The clerical members will celebrate the holy sacrifice of the Mass daily, and the non-clerical members will
attend. The oration, the Rosary, and the visit to the Blessed Sacrament will be daily private or communal exercises [50].
In all the houses of the Institute, the Feast of Christ the King, Holy Thursday, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, and the feasts of Saint Francis de Sales, Saint Thomas Aquinas, and Saint Benedict will be solemnly celebrated.
59 — The norms of law regarding the obligations of clerks (sacramental practices, retreats...) shall be faithfully observed. The directory will set forth the modalities. The attire of the members of the Institute is the black cassock with buttons, featuring a Roman collar and a fringed belt [51]. Major superiors may permit the use of the black clergyman with a Roman collar, outside places of worship and community, depending on the circuмstances of place and time. The supreme moderator shall determine the attire of the members of the Institute in mission territories, according to the missionary traditions particular to each region.
60 — The members of the Institute have the obligation to observe the Constitutions, the authentic interpretation of which is reserved to the Holy See.
61 — The Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest is headquartered at the episcopate of Mouila.
