As an aside, a similar trick is being done with Archbishop Lefebvre:

Quote only the old, pre-1987 accord Archbishop (so as portray him as the eternal diplomat), and omit (or even deny!) he rejected the deal the next day, and forevermore required the conversion of Rome before considering any practical accord.

• "We have been scorned too long. Let's us leave this schismatic ghetto and prelaturize our order."
• "The sedes are evil, but on the other hand, the Jєωs are really nice people... just misunderstood."

• "Too many babies make you poor, so NFP is fine... some of the time."
• " To carry on our holy battle, we need more money... and real-estate!"
•  "Tell the faithful to donate, donate...donate!"
•  "Intellectual and pious Catholic men are charming, but we need priests who don't ask questions."
