I have never heard of such a thing.

They happen if there is a very large crowd and not the facilities in a church. The confession would still be private and valid.

I have done this.
I’ll say that it is very humbling, especially when it is in public.

You haven't lived! That particular portable confessional has been through at least hundreds if not thousands of confessions, heard both indoors and outdoors by dozens of different priests since the early 70s. We used it in our own home and the halls/homes/garages/yards of many others throughout the 70s-80s. When that's what you have, that's what you have.

Portable confessional I get.
Outside, with people watching, I don't.

Well, there's no strict requirement that there even be a Confessional. SSPX had these out for Confessions during ordinations at Winona. You're far enough away from other people so that you won't be overheard.
In some Eastern Rites the custom has been to confess at the front of the church before an icon -- now THAT I would not really care for.

How about inside with people watching / waiting in line? Of course they were far enough away to not hear and always while everyone was praying the rosary, but heck, that's all we had for many years - and the people grew to appreciate it because the alternative was face to face. Given the choice, I'd rather have people watch than do a face to face myself.

They are common at ordinations and pilgrimages. I know some place don’t allow the SSPX on pilgrimage sites, so they set up outdoors.
