His name would be closer to “Ya(h)shu’(guttural)a” in Hebrew. Yeshu is the pejorative shortening of it to remove any connection to the divine personal name of God the Father that forms part of its stem. It was also used as a code name to write polemics against Christ in Rabbinic literature and as an acronym for “May his name/mention be blotted out.”

Thank you.  I read some Hebrew, and just figured that it was a shorter form.  Based on the first link, I don't believe that it's clear that it must be a pejorative.  Most languages have shortened non-pejorative forms of common names.

I'd be interested in seeing the rest of the Hebrew on that painting, since that might say a lot.  I can't quite make out the next word, since I can't really read Hebrew without the vowel points.
