Title: Novus Ordo Way of the Cross
Post by: Disputaciones on March 24, 2017, 08:14:23 PM
Has anyone checked to see whether it has anything bad in it? I read that the Stations are different than the traditional ones, but other than that I don't know.

There are many ways to make the Stations, which version are you referring to?

The "universal" or the one used by the Vatican I guess.

Even before Vat II there was no universal Stations of the Cross.
They was according to St. Alphonsus or St Francis etc depending on your
location and which order of priests served your church.

Angelus Press recently compiled/published a book with over a dozen ways.

Why not focus on the Passion of Jesus and pray that there will be an end for the need to be a resistance.

One local Novus Ordo parish is proud to announce the 20th year now of having a different version of Stations every week during Lent. They give a list of "parish ministries" one Friday each. They treat each event like a Broadway production. They use costumes, write their own script, play their own music and have a "theme" for each production. It seems they don't want to use the same script more than once because the audience gets tired of it right away and they're always hungry for some novelty or another.

I am reminded of what Pope St. Pius X said, "Far, far from the clergy be the love of novelty."

Well, that was then and this is now, I guess.

Have not seen any changes in Latin Rite churches. Some pre-conciliar version included extra prayers.

One thing noticed is sometimes an "extra" Station for the Resurrection is unofficially included in some pamphlets, but never seen in official docuмents.

Here  (http://www.vatican.va/news_services/liturgy/docuмents/ns_lit_doc_via-crucis_en.html)it says:

Quote
The Way of the Cross or Via Crucis, in its present form, with the same fourteen stations placed in the same order, is recorded in Spain in the first half of the seventeenth century especially in Franciscan communities. From the Iberian peninsula it spread first to Sardinia, at that time under the dominion of the Spanish crown and then to Italy. Here it found a convinced and effective apostle in Saint Leonard of Port Maurice (+ 1751), a friar minor and a tireless missionary; he personally erected more than 572 Via Crucis, including the famous one erected inside the Colosseum at the request of Benedict XIV on 27 December 1750 to commemorate the Holy Year.

Compared with the traditional text, the biblical Way of the Cross celebrated by the Holy Father at the Colosseum for the first time in 1991 presented certain variants in the «subjects» of the stations. In the light of history, these variants, rather than new, are - if anything - simply rediscovered.

The biblical Way of the Cross omits stations which lack precise biblical reference such as the Lord's three falls (III, V, VII), Jesus' encounter with his Mother (IV) and with Veronica (VI). Instead we have stations such as Jesus' agony in the Garden of Olives (I), the unjust sentence passed by Pilate (V), the promise of paradise to the Good Thief (XI), the presence of the Mother and the Disciple at the foot of the Cross (XIII). Clearly these episodes are of great salvific import and theological significance for the drama of Christ's passion: an ever-present drama in which every man and woman, knowingly or unknowingly, plays a part.

With the biblical Way of the Cross the intention was not to change the traditional text, which remains fully valid, but quite simply to highlight a few «important stations» which in the textus receptus are either absent or in the background.

Likewise, the Congregation for Divine Worship on various occasions in recent years authorised the use of formulas alternative to the traditional text of the Way of the Cross.

So additional options rather than doing away with the traditional Via Crucis.

To its credit, the reply immediately above [#] linked to a docuмent at the Vatican [‡]:

Quote from: undated at www.vatican.va

Office for the Liturgical Celebrations of the Supreme Pontiff
THE WAY OF THE CROSS
Presentation [by] Piero Marini
Titular Archbishop of Martirano
Master of the Liturgical Celebrations of the Supreme Pontiff

For a Novus Ordo docuмent, it's certainly worth reading.  But much to my exasperation, it's completely undated (is that a habit of flaming Bugnini modernists like him: always "progress"--never look back?).

If the author actually held all the offices or ranks listed for him at the time the docuмent was released, and if we dare trust Wikipedia [*], we can narrow down the docuмent's writing to a period of almost exactly 4 years: 2003--2007.

•   Piero was named Master of Pontifical Liturgical Celebrations in 1987.
•   He was not Titular anything of Martirano--initially Bishop--until 14 Feb. 1998.
•   He was not elevated to archbishop until 29 Sep. 2003.
•   He was de facto transferred to the presidency of the Pontifical Committee for International Eucharistic Congresses as of 1 Oct. 2007.

We can see that he held all offices or ranks simultaneously only 29 Sep. 2003--1 Oct. 2007.  So on the assumption that the Vatican Web site doesn't edit docuмents after they're written to show de facto promotions of their authors, we can conclude that it was completed sometime during 2003--2007.  Which is a surprisingly long time after questions must've first been raised among the faithful by a new-fangled "Way of the Cross celebrated by [Pope John Paul II] at the Colosseum for the first time in 1991" [‡].
