    Dear TAN,

I am most displeased with your company.

Your newsletter lists 5 precepts of the Church leaving out the law about Marriage.

You now exclude the 6th precept of the Church in your newsletters.  6. Obey the laws of the Church regarding Marriage. This is the most attacked precept of the Church. Please defend it.

The 6 Traditionally Taught Precepts of the Church:

The 6 Precepts of the Church (The Duties of a Catholic)
    1. To go to Mass and refrain from servile work on Sundays and holy days
    2. To go to Confession at least once a year (traditionally done during Lent)
    3. To receive the Eucharist at least once a year, during the Easter Season (known as the "Easter duty")
    4. To observe the days of fasting and abstinence
    5. To help to provide for the needs of the Church according to one's abilities and station in life
    6. To obey the marriage laws of the Church

Please use your Newsletter as an opportunity to expose the full teaching of the church.

    Yours in Christ,

  • Apparently there are just "5" precepts of the Church now, in Novus Ordo land.

    https://www.learnreligions.com/the-precepts-of-the-church-542232

At the end of the article, when they mention traditional/deprecated/obsolete Precepts that are no longer included in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, they mention 7 (?)

I, a life-long Trad and ex-seminarian, have never heard of 7 Precepts of the Church.

They're just making up that 7th one. Sure it's a praiseworthy activity, but I could make up lots of "good things to do" as well. That doesn't make them Precepts of the Church. The fact is that there are traditionally SIX Precepts of the Church.

    Don't we all.

Thomas Nelson possibly did more to preserve Catholic Tradition than any other layman in recent memory.

    Requiescat in pace.

  • Yes currently the list stands at 5.

    Previously it was 6.

If we go back even longer to the 15th century it is 10:

In his Summa Theologica (part I, tit. xvii, p. 12) Antoninus of Florence (1439) enumerates ten precepts of the Church universally binding on the faithful. These are:
    • to observe certain feasts
    • to keep the prescribed fasts
    • to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days
    • to confess once a year
    • to receive Holy Communion during paschal time
    • to pay tithes
    • to abstain from any act upon which an interdict has been placed entailing excommunication
    • to refrain also from any act interdicted under pain of excommunication latæ sententiæ
    • to avoid association with the excommunicated
    • finally, not to attend Mass or other religious functions celebrated by a priest living in open concubinage.

  • I agree with now having only 5 church precepts.  The 6th one on marriage was unnecessary because it has to do with love, which is the whole purpose of Catholicism. As Blessed John Lennon told us, in his musical homily of 1967 - “All you Need is Love”.  Surely this was the theme of Vatican 2 and is the main law we all must live by to please God in this age of brotherhood.

Just to clarify, Tom Nelson is still in a nursing home right now. He hasn't passed away yet.

He lost control of the business during bankruptcy proceedings which started in 2007 or 2008. The business was sold to Good Will Publishers (St. Benedict Press is one of their "imprints") in 2009.

  • "Imagine there is no heaven, its easy if you try, no hell below us, above us only sky."

Poor soul was shot on Dec 8th, The Immaculate Conception.  And the Beetles were classically trained musicians, from the old guard.  They knew about their old, English Catholic history.  No Invincible Ignorance for them!

I remember in 1995, a man standing in the kitchen at St. Thomas Aquinas Seminary.  He was wearing jeans, cowboy boots, a button down tee-shirt, and holding a big stack of holy cards.  I introduced myself.  It was Thomas Nelson.
