  • Bishops Michael Burbidge of Raleigh and Peter Jugis of Charlotte have announced that their dioceses will soon cease to be members of the North Carolina Council of Churches.

The Charlotte diocesan newspaper reported that “the North Carolina Council of Churches has taken positions contrary to Catholic teaching on marriage, and the council does not formally oppose abortion.”

Catholic priests and laity who hold positions at the council, including the laywoman who serves as the council’s president, will be leaving their positions.
