Pope John Paul II is the subject of a new animated film intended to teach children about the life of the late pontiff. The movie, called John Paul II: The Friend of All Humanity, was unveiled Tuesday at the Vatican.

The story, which starts with the death of the pope, is told by a talking pen, a diary named Matteo and two snow-white birds. The 30-minute cartoon has been made in eight languages and will be released only on DVD in time for the Christmas season.

J.L. Lopez-Guardia, an animator who worked on the project, says the aim is to present the human side of John Paul II.

"We thought animated characters could do it best," Lopez-Guardia says.

I think it would have been better to have had a talking Koran named Bubba discussing his life.

But let your speech be yea, yea: no, no: and that which is over and above these, is of evil.

  • If you really take on a study of the life of Jesus, you begin to realize that any Christian would be offended by the title "A Friend of all Humanity."

    Beatitudes anyone ?

  • Not will be purchasing this.

They should produce stories for children on the lives of glorious popes such as Innocent III, Boniface VIII, Eugene IV, and Pius X, instead.
If anyone says that true and natural water is not necessary for baptism and thus twists into some metaphor the words of our Lord Jesus Christ" Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Spirit" (Jn 3:5) let him be anathema.

  • Article in the OP is almost ten years old.

Are they still producing this film?
"Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

  • It actually makes sense. After all, Wojtyla was a cartoonish figure, a caricature of himself.
"This principle is most certain: The non-Christian cannot in any way be Pope. The reason for this is that he cannot be head of what he is not a member. Now, he who is not a Christian is not a member of the Church, and a manifest heretic is not a Christian, as is clearly taught by St. Cyprian, St. Athanasius, St. Augustine, St. Jerome, and others. Therefore, the manifest heretic cannot be Pope." -- St. Robert Bellarmine
