The fruits of the Society differ from those of the past when it had a different mission. There is now a loss of confidence and old-style Lefebvrism has given way to a belief that what effect it can have in the conciliar church is better than nothing. The idea that it can actually convert modern Rome has been abandoned.
The calibre of today's fruits also has to be considered when comparing the generations that attend Society churches. Bp. Williamson recently spoke of the liberalism creeping into German and French districts with regard to their attachment to modern life and a Rome that appears conservative. Of course, having a foot in both camps has benefited the Society and appeals to folk who prefer not to think. Listening to those district superiors fond of flirting with the press one gets the impression that only a mere fudging of some doctrine will now ensure conciliar integration. If this is the fruit of forty years of honest endeavour to save the Church on earth, it will taste very sour indeed.
