My great-uncle, who was rector of San Duminku in Valletta, was groomed to be the successor of Archbishop Gonzi, but ill health put an end to that (indeed, Archbishop Gonzi eventually outlived him).
For years my family spoke of this failure of our beloved and venerable uncle to attain the episcopacy with disappointment. Now I feel relief that he did not have to play a role in the de-Catholicization of Malta (which, of course, was already well underway if not mostly accomplished by that time anyway)... I like to fancy that he would have fought the changes and preserved Tradition as much as possible had he been made bishop, but of course there's no way to know that (and would have probably been unlikely anyway). He was personally a very good, pious and disciplined man, but unfortunately the Church is in the condition it is now because many good, pious, and disciplined priests and bishops did not speak up and resist novelty...
