  • Hi, long time no-see, Cathinfo.

Am looking for anyone who has a copy of Michael Malone's Apostolic Digest.

I hope this kind soul will be able to faithfully transcribe for me, or ideally photocopy/scan (and then send me) a source or two that is in this work.  I am approaching this with great attention to detail, and want to know exactly how the quote(s) appear, including formatting and how Malone cites them.

There's two or three quotes I'm interested in, none of them are very long.  It means quite a bit to me, I'd even be willing to throw a couple bucks your way via paypal if it entices volunteers.  I have to imagine someone on here has a copy.

Reply here or send me a PM-- thanks!

  • Excellent.  There's a few:

    1) From Pope Pius XII: (from MCC)

    Quote
Christ indicated Baptism as the means whereby future believers were to be grafted on the Body of the Church... Finally, on the tree of the Cross He won for Himself His Church, that is, all the members of His Mystical Body, who are incorporated in this Mystical Body by the waters of Baptism through the saving virtue of this Cross.

I'd like to know how Malone quotes this (a photocopy/scan would be ideal, but a diligent transcription would work just fine also).  I'd like to know how he cites it (as "MCC", "Mystici Corporis Christ, Mystici Corporis, etc.).  I'd like to basically know everything about how he presents this quote.  I believe he may, at the end of the quote, cite it as "(PTC, 1027, 1030)," so I'd like to know that too.  In fact, if Malone ever indicates-- such as in the introduction, if he has a list of acronyms-- what "PTC" stands for, I'd appreciate that too.  Basically want to see exactly how he presents this quote.  If you could include the page number Malone's book has it on, that would be awesome, too.

    2) also from Pope Pius XII: (from an allocution, I think)

    Quote

The Church has never accepted even the most holy and most eminent Doctors, and does not now accept even a single one of them, as the principal source of truth. The Church certainly considers Thomas and Augustine great Doctors, and she accords them the highest praise; but, by divine mandate, the interpreter and guardian of the Sacred Scriptures and depository of Sacred Tradition living within her, the Church alone is the entrance to salvation; she alone, by herself, and under the protection and guidance of the Holy Ghost, is the source of truth.

Same story, want to know exactly how it's presented, etc.

    3) Pope Benedict XV (from ad beatissimi, I think)

    Quote

The nature of the Catholic faith is such that nothing can be added, nothing taken away. Either it is held in its entirety or it is rejected totally. This is the Catholic faith which, unless a man believes faithfully and firmly, he cannot be saved.

    Same deal.

And then just a bonus couple, because I'm not sure if he cites them or not:

    4) From Pope St. Innocent I: (might be labelled as from epistle 29, not sure

    Quote
That the rewards of eternal life are given without Baptism is very foolish

    5) Pope Leo IV (might be labelled as third Council of Vallence)

    Quote
All the multitude of the faithful are regenerated from water and the Holy Spirit (John 3, 5), and through this are truly incorporated into the Church.

Thank you so much!  Feel free to PM me if any additional details are needed, or if you scan them and need a place to send them.

I sent you a PM as well.  Not sure if you can recieve them yet-- I think Matthew has a limit of twenty or twenty five posts before someone can receive PMs.  If you don't get the PM throw up a couple of junk posts in this thread to get past the 25 post mark and then check your inbox.  Cheers.

I found this one. Here is exactly how it appears on page 317:

The Church has never accepted, and does not now accept as the principal source of truth, even the most holy and most eminent Doctors. Certainly, the Church considers Thomas and Augustine great Doctors, and she accords them the highest praise; but she recognizes infallibility only in the inspired authors of Sacred Scripture. Being by divine mandate the interpreter and guardian of the Sacred Scriptures, the Church alone is the entrance to salvation, and depository of the Sacred Tradition living within her.  She alone, by herself, under the protection and guidance of the Holy Spirit, is the source of truth.                        Pope Pius XII

The reference for the quote given in the index (p. 546) is as follows: Pius XII  ALLOCUTION: to the Gregorian, October 17, 1953, PTC 1351.

In the “Key to Bibliography” section (third from the bottom on page 477), the abbreviation PTC is explained as follows: PAPAL TEACHINGS: THE CHURCH, selected and arranged by the Benedictine monks of Solesmes, Boston: St. Paul Editions, 1962 (paragraph numbers cited)

  • Great stuff, Romantheo.  Looking forward to what else you can find.

If I can bother you also, can you provide a bibliographic citation for Miller's Digest?  Abridged, unabridged, copyright date/revision date, etc.?

  • Very kind of you both!  I've been spending most of my time at The Trad Forum, and even at that "real life" has interfered with my forum activity pretty significantly over the last six months.

RomanTheo, really looking forward to what else you can find.  Also, I now have a heightened interest in the quote ascribed to Innocent I.  Thanks so much, look forward to hearing from you!
