The weirdest thing about this story is that he doesn't seem to have had a gun to defend himself, and he just stood there yakking with the dispatcher and watching the guy break into his house and murder him. I guess I expect people to be more normal in a place like Iowa, even a Novus Ordo "priest".
Priests, Novus Ordo or otherwise, seem to be a target for murder, though. There was
the two FSSP priests in Phoenix who got attacked by the crazy burglar in 2013. One was dead and the other nearly dead but was saved at the hospital. In Eureka, California, about 20 years ago
the Novus Ordo priest was murdered by a crazy man who had just been released from a halfway house about two blocks down the street, probably minutes after having been declared "not a threat to society" by some Jєωιѕн lawyer. The guy didn't make it more than two blocks down the street before he decided he needed to murder someone, and broke into the rectory which unfortunately he happened to be in front of at that moment.
There was a conservative Novus Ordo priest in Wisconsin who
was found in his rectory with his head caved in in 1998. He was exposing some of the unmentionable crimes of some Novus Ordo clergy, so there was suspicion they had him murdered, but the case remains unsolved.
Then there was Fr. Leslie, the sedevacantist priest in South Africa, who had his throat slit by a poor person he made the mistake of hiring to take care of his garden.
There are some crazy liberals who
pretend to be scandalized at priests being armed and
parishioners carrying guns at Mass or
during ceremonies, but there is a great need for protection in the lawless society we live in today, and being murdered by a crazy or a burglar is not a form of martyrdom, even if it is a priest who gets killed.
