• Nebraska priest killed after church assault; suspect is in custody, officials say

Quote
A Catholic priest died early Sunday after being stabbed in the rectory of St. John the Baptist Church in Fort Calhoun.

The Rev. Stephen Gutgsell was taken by ambulance to the Nebraska Medical Center, where he died, according to a statement from the Archdiocese of Omaha.

Washington County Sheriff Mike Robinson said Kierre L. Williams, 43, from Sioux City, Iowa, was taken into custody at the scene. He was later arrested on suspicion of homicide and use of a weapon to commit a felony.

“The Archdiocese of Omaha is praying for Father Stephen Gutgsell, who was assaulted during an invasion at the rectory of St. John the Baptist parish in Fort Calhoun early Sunday morning," the statement from the Omaha archdiocese said. "Father Gutgsell was transported to Nebraska Medicine in Omaha, where he died of his injuries. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is investigating, and there are no further details at this time. Please join Archbishop George Lucas in prayer for the repose of Father Gutgsell, for his family and for the St. John the Baptist parish community in this tragic time.”

Robinson said Gutgsell, 65, placed a call to 911 at about 5 a.m. and said someone was attempting to break into the rectory. Deputies arrived within minutes and found Gutgsell suffering from stab wounds, he said.

So a man breaks into the rectory, stabs priest, and then waits around for the cops to arrive?

• From another article:

Quote
Father Gutgsell pleaded guilty in 2007 to embezzlement from a previous church he was assigned to. After probation and paying restitution, he was eventually transferred to another church.

Sounds from the sequence of events as though the priest called 911 before the perp had managed to gain entry into the rectory, so it's possible / likely that the police arrived while he was still there attempting to burglarize the rectory, having just finished breaking in and stabbing the priest  Article said that the police arrived on scene within minutes of the initial call.

In any case,

• The weirdest thing about this story is that he doesn't seem to have had a gun to defend himself, and he just stood there yakking with the dispatcher and watching the guy break into his house and murder him. I guess I expect people to be more normal in a place like Iowa, even a Novus Ordo "priest".

Priests, Novus Ordo or otherwise, seem to be a target for murder, though. There was the two FSSP priests in Phoenix who got attacked by the crazy burglar in 2013. One was dead and the other nearly dead but was saved at the hospital. In Eureka, California, about 20 years ago the Novus Ordo priest was murdered by a crazy man who had just been released from a halfway house about two blocks down the street, probably minutes after having been declared "not a threat to society" by some Jєωιѕн lawyer. The guy didn't make it more than two blocks down the street before he decided he needed to murder someone, and broke into the rectory which unfortunately he happened to be in front of at that moment.

There was a conservative Novus Ordo priest in Wisconsin who was found in his rectory with his head caved in in 1998. He was exposing some of the unmentionable crimes of some Novus Ordo clergy, so there was suspicion they had him murdered, but the case remains unsolved.

Then there was Fr. Leslie, the sedevacantist priest in South Africa, who had his throat slit by a poor person he made the mistake of hiring to take care of his garden.

There are some crazy liberals who pretend to be scandalized at priests being armed and parishioners carrying guns at Mass or during ceremonies, but there is a great need for protection in the lawless society we live in today, and being murdered by a crazy or a burglar is not a form of martyrdom, even if it is a priest who gets killed.

• This priest had some problems years ago it seems:

Slain Omaha priest had troubled past (pillarcatholic.com)

Quote
In February 2007, the priest was arrested and charged with stealing more than $125,000 over three years, from the Omaha parish where he served.
According to court records obtained by The Pillar, Gutgsell admitted to stealing the money.
The priest’s attorney said he had begun embezzling the money after he racked up credit card debts he felt unable to repay. But little information is known about the details of the crime — in response to a 2021 FOIA request, Omaha police said they were unable to release several pages of “investigatory” material detailing the theft, because of Nebraska’s records statutes.
While he could have faced 20 years in prison for the theft, Gutgsell was instead given five years probation, 500 hours of community service, and ordered to complete a residential treatment program at the South Down Institute, a Canadian psychological treatment facility for priests and religious.
The priest was also ordered to pay the Archdiocese of Omaha some $40,000 in restitution.
In 2012, he was released from his probation, with almost $13,000 left to repay. The Archdiocese of Omaha told court officials that it had no objections to the end of Gutgsell’s probation, and that the priest had “agreed to continue making payments” on the amount owed.
In June of this year, Gutgsell’s brother — also an Omaha priest — reached a plea bargain with prosecutors, and pled guilty to two misdemeanor charges of theft, almost two years after he was charged with stealing nearly $200,000 from an elderly priest[/iurl], along with thousands from the Nebraska parish where he was pastor.
According to charging docuмents, Fr. Michael Gutgsell, 74, gave the stolen money, along with hundreds of thousands from his own savings, to an Omaha homeless man whom he apparently believed would pay him back.
It is not clear whether Fr. Michael Gutgsell will be returned to priestly ministry.
One wonders if there is a connection between his crimes and his murder.

• "The suspect in the murder of a Nebraska priest was discovered lying on top of the victim forming the shape of a cross as the pastor was bleeding to death, according to an affidavit filed in the Washington County Court.
...
“On top of the white male [Gutgsell], there was a black male [Williams] laying on top of him with his back pressed on the white male’s chest area,” the responding officer said. “The black male was laying on him in a perpendicular fashion (T) with his feet facing the kitchen.”

The officer said he entered the parish rectory shortly after 5 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 10, after the priest called 911 to report a home intruder with a knife, according to the affidavit. When the officer arrived six minutes later, he unholstered his pistol, entered the building, and announced his presence.

“I heard a male voice that yelled ‘in here,’ followed by additional yelling that I could not decipher,” the officer said in the affidavit. “I then hear the voice yell ‘help me,’ I responded by asking who else was in the house, and the voice stated ‘an intruder.’”

When the officer saw Gutgsell, the priest had “a severe laceration to his face and was bleeding profusely,” according to the statement. Officers who came to the scene to provide backup and perform life-saving measures on Gutgsell identified more lacerations on his face, hands, and back, the affidavit alleges."

.

That's not why I had questions. Yes, a homeless person murdering someone is a pretty common experience, but what just blew my mind was this statement from the article:

Quote
According to charging docuмents, Fr. Michael Gutgsell, 74, gave the stolen money, [??] along with hundreds of thousands from his own savings [???!!??!], to an Omaha homeless man whom he apparently believed would pay him back [??????!!!!!?????!?!?!?!].

That has to be one of the strangest things I have read in a very long time.

• Yeti:  The priest killed in Phoenix was  Fr. Kenneth Walker, of the Indult of Mater Miseri Cordiae. He just so happened to be the nephew of Editor of the 4 Marks, Kathleen Plumb.  Moran was the one who did it.  Moran just happened to be out of jail.  IMO i still think the dioceses was involved.  The news was not much.  But Fr. Walker had his body go home to Kansas and autopsied.  He was shot 11 times. The gun, a 350 caliber, in the newspaper, was the weapon taken from the rectory by Fr. Terra, who could not pull the trigger, for he had his hands tore up.  Well, how many rounds does a 350 have?  Where did all the shots come from?
