  • Let's just say that I and most theologians disagree with the statement purportedly from Pius XII that such a one would receive the gift of infallibility.  You cannot teach the Church unless you're part of the Ecclesia Docens, and only bishops are part of this "Teaching Church".  On top of that, jursidiction cannot be held by someone who isn't at least a cleric.  So I think Pius XII misfired there.

You don’t count, please back this up with some references from credible theologians. Sorry if I sound rude, but you shouldn’t make such statements without references.
For what doth it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, and suffer the loss of his own soul? Or what exchange shall a man give for his soul?

  • From the Lives and Times of the Popes, Volume 9:

For what doth it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, and suffer the loss of his own soul? Or what exchange shall a man give for his soul?

  • Hi Quo Vadis,
Thanks for the excerpt from the life of Pope Gregory.  But...we can't put too much confidence in a saint-of-the-day book, to explain complex canon law/theological matters.

Absolutely true, but until Ladislaus made his claim, I was quite certain that the Pope immediately wielded complete jurisdiction as soon as he was elected, regardless of the status of his consecration. Frankly, I’m fairly certain that I’ve read the same in one or more theology manuals. I’m in the process of finding my references.
