  • Driving home from Mass yesterday, 5 y.o. asked about a church (Novus Ordo) we drove by, my 7 y.o. piped up and said it's probably a pagan church. 5 y.o. asked what happens at the pagan Church, and this is the response she got from my 7 y.o.: (transcribed with the highest accuracy I can manage)

    Quote
"at the pagan mass the priest who isn't really a priest puts on a clown face and at the consecration he says 'this is your body,' so you see if he changes the words of the consecration, it's not the Mass! And for the sermon he does cartwheels and they don't allow kneeling."
    .

I haven't really talked to them about the N.O. yet, so this is what they've gleaned from the nuns at school. Needless to say, I got a real kick out of it. Hope everyone else does too.
"Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

  • Yeah, the Communist V2 "priests" have given clowns a bad name for the last 50 years.  The "Birthday Party Clowns Assoc" should sue them for defamation.  :clown:

Well, except for the cartwheels part.  Most NO presiders are too fat to do such acrobatic things.  They'd defer to the liturgical-dance nuns for that part of it.

  • the Protestants made a toy called the "Jack-in-the-box" . It was made to make fun of Christ in the tabernacle, complete with clown, music , etc.

Can you tell us which protestants? Can you substantiate this?

  • OH, Nadir, I read this a long time ago.  I would have to ponder where I read it.  I just remember that the Jack-in-the-box was to make fun of Christ in the tabernacle. Maybe if I google for info, maybe it will lead me to your answer. I will search

We used to joke about liturgical break dancers in my graduate theology days. Alas our Archbishop was presiding at a pagan service as it were, alas too on the patron feast of the seminary St Joseph, I beheld the spectacle of male and female liturgical dancers. Seminary attached to the theological college I was suffering through. Oh for a muse of napalm…..

  • Nadir: I will look in the book by Robert Wilberforce, who wrote on the Holy Eucharist, he was a convert from the Anglican, like Cardinal Manning. It has been awhile, but when I read it, and it was mentioned, wow! that stuck in my mind.  We know that the Church has been fun of for such a long time.

It makes sense the Prots would have made use of it at least. One of the references in the Wikipedia article gives this history: "devil in the box":

Early in the 1500s, a German clockmaker named Claus made a box for a local prince whose son was about to celebrate his fifth birthday. A simple wooden box with metal edges and a handle, and with a turn of the crank produced a simple tune and out popped a 'Jack,' a Devil, a comical version with a leering smile. Other nobles took note of the child's toy and the idea spread. Technology by the 1700s meant that it was a 'common toy' or novelty often in use for all ages. It was around this time that the image of a devil in a box became cartoon fodder for rogue politicians and other public figures held to ridicule.

Another theory as to the origin of the jack-in-the-box is that it comes from the 13th century English prelate Sir John Schorne, who is often pictured holding a boot with a devil in it. According to folklore, he once cast the devil into a boot to protect the village of North Marston in Buckinghamshire. This theory may explain why in French, a jack-in-the-box is called a 'diable en boîte' (literally 'a boxed devil').

Your 7yo hit the nail on the head with "probably pagan": See the start of Michael Matt's latest video from St Patrick's day that I just posted. He shows some footage of an Imam chanting in a Catholic Church in Ireland, and the faithful upbraiding him in the carpark for being a heretic.

Just after I left the NO around 1980, the priest invited a Buddhist monk into our church to teach the faithful how to do Buddhist meditation. He did so with bare torso, squatting in the sanctuary, back to the tabernacle. It was the only time the word 'meditation' was heard in that church (in the post VII era at least). The priest sure didn't teach anyone how to do a Catholic meditation.

  • Thank you Plenus: I read that but, the Jack-in-the-box, as I read it, was to make a mockery of Christ True Presences. I will continue to look.  I went through Luther, and Robert Wilberforce, did not have it, Fr. Muller and Fr. Faber books I looked still not there.  I dove tail my books and underline. So, I still hope to find it.

I wonder though how many more mockeries were made and how they were presented.
