  • So much stupidity on college level.

la Salle University junior John Gitaka says he was leaning toward voting for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump before he heard first lady Michelle Obama speak Wednesday at La Salle University.

"I thought her speech was very powerful and persuasive," Gitaka said. "I came in as an undecided voter. [Obama] also made me realize that by not voting, I would be supporting Trump and going against everything that President [Barack] Obama and President [Bill] Clinton fought for. So yes, her speech definitely hit home for me."

Obama was hoping to reach young and undecided voters like Gitaka when she spoke to a crowd of more than 3,000 people that included university and Philadelphia High School For Girls students. Obama was introduced by La Salle student Ludmille Glaude, who referred to the First Lady as, "the definition of 'Black girl magic."

"This isn't just a time of transition for my family, but for our entire country, as we decide who our next president will be," Obama said. "And transitions like these can be difficult. They can involve a lot of uncertainty. We saw that back in 2008 when Barack was first elected."

Obama joked that she and the president need to find new jobs since their time in the White House is winding down, adding that there is no better person to replace her husband than former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

"We know that Hillary's the right person because we have seen her character and commitment not just during this campaign but over the course of her entire life," Obama said. "We've seen her dedication to public service. When she didn't become president in 2008, Hillary didn't throw in the towel. No, she once again answered the call to serve and earned sky-high approval ratings for the outstanding job she did for us as our secretary of state."

Obama told the crowd that, "It's not enough to come to a rally and post some selfies, and that's all cute and all that ... It's not enough to get angry and just speak out about the need for change."

"Elections aren't just about who votes, but who doesn't vote, and that is especially true for young people like all you," Obama said. "In fact, in 2012, voters under the age of 30 ... provided the margin of victory for Barack in four key battleground states: Florida, Ohio, Virginia and right here in Pennsylvania."

La Salle junior Aaron Brown took heed to Obama's call to action.

"This is the most important election in our country's history," Brown said. "So with everything going on, as a voter for the first time, it's up to our generation to take the initiative and make a difference in the nation in aniy way we can."

And while Brown said he respects Trump's confidence and his ego somewhat, he finds him to be a protagonist.

"[Trump] isn't the best with foreign relations," Brown added. "The point that Michelle made about [Hillary] being the most qualified candidate, really allows for her to go into office right away and know how to handle things both internationally and domestically."

Girls High student Lailah Coleman agrees.

"Donald Trump feeds off of fear and ignorance and acts like he won't ever be able to understand where people like me and my friends come from," 16-year-old Coleman said.

Also in attendance was Philadelphia music artist Jazmine Sullivan, City Councilwoman Cindy Bass, state Rep. Art Haywood, Dwight Evans, candidate for the 2nd Congressional district, Josh Shapiro, candidate for Pennsylvania attorney general, and Katie McGinty, candidate
