  • Thank you very much for this post Michael93.
"I receive Thee, redeeming Prince of my soul. Out of love for Thee have I studied, watched through many nights, and exerted myself: Thee did I preach and teach. I have never said aught against Thee. Nor do I persist stubbornly in my views. If I have ever expressed myself erroneously on this Sacrament, I submit to the judgement of the Holy Roman Church, in obedience of which I now part from this world." Oops.  You presented Catholic doctrine and got three down-thumbs from non-Catholics.  Better go another route.

  • A surprisingly comprehensive work for a two-volume set.  Definitely recommended.  A little patience and persistence might yield the set for around twenty USD.  Otherwise you'll find it ~forty, still worth it.

"Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

  • Almost everybody who writes or comments on this subject explains the doctrine by explaining it away, as we shall see further on. He begins by affirming the truth of the axiom, Extra Ecciesiam, etc., and ends by denying it-while continuing to insist vigorously that he is not doing so. - Fr. Wathen

I bet Canon George D. Smith, D.D., Ph.D got along wonderfully with Fenton. They both most likely got along marvelously with Cardinal Cushing who also explained the dogma EENS by explaining it away.
"But Peter and the apostles answering, said: We ought to obey God, rather than men." - Acts 5:29

The Highest Principle in the Church: "We are first of all under obedience to God, and only then under obedience to man" - Fr. Hesse

You do realize that Fenton wrote against "explaining it away", yes?

Was Fenton an idiot who could not realize a contradiction within the same article, wherein he warns against "explaining EENS away" and also teaches BOD?  Rhetorical question.  We're well versed in the Feeneyites contempt for theologians.

  • By the way, this text too REJECTS the belonging to the soul but not to the body stuff (the language that appears in the Catechism of St. Pius X and the Baltimore catechism) as erroneous.

Starts off very well by talking about the necessity of membership in the Church for salvation.  But then gratuitously throws out there the exceptions that render the prior treatment into nothing but pious hyperbole.  Just like with every BoDer explanation.

  • He starts out by very beautifully articulating Traditional Catholic ecclesiology, talking about the necessity of membership in the Church for salvation.

Then he cites Trent and Pius IX (both based on the usual misreading of those texts) and refers to them as "exceptions".  Which at once transforms the necessity of membership in the Church for salvation from a necessity of means into a necessity of precept and causes him to end up stressing the "urgency" (not necessity) of belonging to the Church.

In the end, self-contradictory and therefore an Epic Fail !

On this site, more than anything else, sections of theology manuals get thumbed down.  Hmm.

It seems the more irrefutable the proof the more likely you get a thumbs down because they cannot verbally refute it.  Will they be condemned as harshly as they condemn others who are guilty of ignorance?
