  • The Church grants a plenary indulgence to those who read the Bible for 30 minutes:
    Quote
    50. Reading of Sacred Scripture (Sacrae Scripturae lectio)
A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful, who with the veneration due the divine word make a spiritual reading from Sacred Scripture.

A plenary indulgence is granted, if this reading is continued for at least one half an hour.
May God bless you and keep you

  • For most people, the writings of saints and popes are much more valuable that the bible.  After all, how many people read the bible and suddenly think they've come across a theological concept that no one else has seen before?  Too many people these days read the bible and think they're the experts on it meaning.
    .
The writings of the popes, on the other hand, explain what the Church teaches about the bible since it is pretty difficult to read many writings of popes without also reading the biblical passages they quote.

  • The Holy Bible bests all of the writings of saints and popes. The Church understands this reality which is why she granted indulgences to Catholics reading holy scripture.

"I'm running things now, and I'll do everything it takes to destroy the enemies of God. Now, you join me, and I promise you, you'll never have to worry about whether you're doing the right thing or the wrong thing, because we will do the only thing."

Agreed. Reading Holy Scripture is edifying of course, but too many people fall into the trap of seeing one verse in isolation(said verse likely having lost much of its meaning or clarity in translation), interpreting it based off of their layman's knowledge, and running with that to create their own pet theory and doubt the Church's teaching. The entire Protestant faith is based off that pitfall. So it is important to read Scripture, but only in conjunction with commentaries and having an already firm grounding in Catholic teaching. Any lingering issues and points of confusion can always be cleared by speaking to your priest or searching Catholic websites online, but as long as you have a good knowledge of the faith and the aid of a good commentary, you should be mostly in the clear.

  • Thank you for this thread and the Indulgence reminders. St. Vincent Ferrer knew Sacred Scripture by heart. It is of the utmost importance for us to read Sacred Scripture, the decrees of Popes and Councils, and the writings of the Church Fathers when possible. Ignorance of Scripture, says St. Jerome nobly, is naught but ignorance of Jesus Christ. With Douay Rheims, and Bp. Challoner or Fr. Haydovk's commentary, you can't go wrong. Catena Aurea is another great source of Bible verses with Patristic commentaries on each verse. Well worth reading. If we read devoutly and reverently, our knowledge and love of God One and Triune, of Our Lady, will grow every day.
"We wish also to make amends for the insults to which Your Vicar on earth and Your Priests are everywhere subjected [above all by schismatic sedevacantists - Nishant Xavier], for the profanation, by conscious neglect or Terrible Acts of Sacrilege, of the very Sacrament of Your Divine Love; and lastly for the Public Crimes of Nations who resist the Rights and The Teaching Authority of the Church which You have founded." - Act of Reparation to the Sacred Heart of Lord Jesus.
