  • I'm glad to see they refused him. At a Motu Mass I once attended, a religious sister in secular garb stuck her hands out to receive at the altar rail and the priest complied.

    Massgoer in Eucharist incident restrained

    TOM SHIEL

    Thu, Sep 16, 2010

A MASSGOER who objected to receiving the Eucharist on his tongue at a Latin Mass in Co Mayo had to be restrained when his protests led to a scuffle in the church. The incident at Knock Shrine was described by the Latin Mass Society of Ireland as "sad" and "disturbing".

It occurred when a man approached the altar of the parish church and insisted he get communion in his hand rather than on the tongue.

Fr Wulfran Lebocq, who was assisting on the altar, quietly told the communicant to take communion on his tongue. This is in accordance with the traditional Latin rite.

According to onlookers, the communicant told the priest: "You're in Ireland now".

Before being restrained, the communicant grabbed a host from the ciborium, and in the process the host fell on the floor.

According to Peadar Laighléis, president of the Latin Mass Society of Ireland, the man had to be escorted into the sacristy to "restrain him from causing another scene in the church".

The man protested that he was being held against his will. He was informed he was free to leave but not to return to the church.

A spokesman for the Archbishop of Tuam, Dr Michael Neary, said the archdiocese had been informed of the incident which occurred during the annual pilgrimage of the Latin Mass Society of Ireland to Knock on September 4th.

Describing the incident as "somewhat unfortunate", the spokesman added it had occurred "spontaneously".

He went on to say that Fr Richard Gibbons, a curate in Knock, had spoken to those involved and dealt with the incident at the time.

As far as the archdiocese was concerned the matter had now been dealt with.

The incident occurred during Sung Latin Mass in the old parish church which is sometimes called the Apparition Church as the 1879 visions took place there.

  • He went there for the explicit purpose of committing sacrilege.

Interesting that he said "You're in Ireland now."

Gives an idea of the depth of anti-traditionalism in Ireland.

  • Only if the Vatican did not legalized communion in the hand.
There would be far more respect for the Blessed Sacrament.
Situations like what happened at the Knock Shrine would
    never have happened.
I am proud to say when I use to attend the novus ordo,
up to about 1982, I never had communion in the hand.

  • What is so sad, that so many Priests, and Nuns came from
Ireland to America. The majority of Priests even in the
1960's were of Irish decent. Including the Priest that
Baptized me in 1953, and all the Nuns when I attended
    Catholic School.
They sure taught the Faith by the book at that time.
Sad to see the Faith decline in once Catholic Ireland.

  • Makes you wonder what this man wanted to do with Our Lord... to fight to take Him in his hands. Probably would have taken Him to some freemasonic lodge and consequently to some satanic black mass.

  • That isn't impossible, although I don't think it is likely.  I expect he simply wanted to make a really stupid point about his "right" to receive in the hand.

He may have that right at a Mass celebrated in the ordinary form.  At a Mass of the extraordinary form, he most certainly does not.  Just as anyone with any sense would know you can't receive in the had at an Eastern Rite liturgy, the traditional Latin rite precludes it as well.

The man also may simply be mentally ill.

I saw a beautiful woman take one at St. Matthews Cathedral in DC, and run for it.  The priest went as fast as he could, but she got away.  She was smiling with glee.  A few years later it was said on good authority that consecrated hosts were going for $500 a piece.

  • I am deeply disturbed about all these Holy Communion excesses.  I can't grasp a mind set that would possess God like this.  WHAT do they want to do with Him?  When one receives communion, is it a taking or a giving?  He is the vine, we are the branches.  Where do these other funyonkers come in?  What could they possibly be thinking?  I pity the priests who have to deal with them.
