List of Suppressed Saints
« on: May 01, 2014, 03:05:00 PM »
I thought we could make a list of suppressed saints since around the time of Vatican II and afterward. Do these saints have anything in common that would cause their removal from the calendar and the suppression of their cultus?

St. Christopher
St. Philomena
St. Simon of Trent
Blessed Andrea of Rinn

The Jews hate what St Simon of Trent stands for.

St. Christopher is one of the fourteen holy helpers, and I think the other thirteen, including the devotion as fourteen, were also suppressed:

St. Catherine of Alexandria
St. Margaret of Antioch
St. Barbara
St. Giles
St. Blaise
St. Denis
St. Vitus
St. Elmo
St. Pantaleon
St. Cyriacus
St. Austace
St. George
I'm note sure of last, but St. Catherine reminds me that St. Joan of Arc was removed too.

These saints were also martyrs (except St. Giles).

I was told that the first 33 popes were martyrs and those that had feasts were also removed. Not sure how to check that, but maybe there were more martyrs removed than other saints.

St. Blaise

Saint Blaise?  But they do the blessing of throats even in the Novus Ordo (though the last time I attended one of their blessings, I was blessed by a layman--they set up just like communion with "Eucharistic Ministers" along with the priest doing the blessings).  Or is there a different Saint Blaise?

No different St. Blaise that I know of. And I can't confirm that all novus ordo churches honor St. Blaise. My experience in our diocese was that one novus ordo priest did it, and he said with permission. All traditional priests did it, however. Maybe this wasn't the norm.

It may be relevant that St. Catherine of Alexandria, once even a holy day of obligation, was suppressed; then there are references that JPII gave an option to celebrate.  I suppose her feast may be celebrated in the novus ordo in some places. I doubt all.  I am mentioning it because it might explain our different experience around the blessing of the throats and St. Blaise.

Either way, these saints are treated differently since Vatican II. While these examples may represent a change, variation or return, I think they can be considered on a  thread of suppressed saints since their cultus was changed.
