  • We were talking to a friend and he suggested we google JP2 madison square gardens 1979 (one year into his papacy). This is what we came up with.

This has been kept under wraps 35 years?!

Is this a saint in the making? It seems the bishops/cardinals are a little concerned.

Does anyone in cathinfoland know what happened at the end of this initial seven minutes? Please tell us if you know.

  • It's definitely real; it's been on YouTube for a while. Francis isn't the first Clown Pope.
"This principle is most certain: The non-Christian cannot in any way be Pope. The reason for this is that he cannot be head of what he is not a member. Now, he who is not a Christian is not a member of the Church, and a manifest heretic is not a Christian, as is clearly taught by St. Cyprian, St. Athanasius, St. Augustine, St. Jerome, and others. Therefore, the manifest heretic cannot be Pope." -- St. Robert Bellarmine

HAHAHA  Imagine how many minutes there were for all those pathetic people in the audience that day.

    Some here was there?
Did he get around to doing more than making silly noises?
    Who were those bishops?

Edit: Someone here on CathInfo was there?

Was there any media coverage of or commentary on this?

It was before the Internet, so you're going to have to resort to more traditional research.  You might have to go to the public library.  The research librarian is going to need a date.  JPII Madison Square Garden 1979 could be a start, but keep in mind the other things, like the setting you could see, the introduction, the age group of the audience, the layout of the stage, because there might have been two or more sessions, on more than one day, that year.

Yes, it's for real.  I had the misfortune to arrive in NY, Penn Station, just ahead of JP2.  It took me four hours to escape from Manhattan on public transport.  Either our memories are going or most trade were not alive to remember.
     :geezer:
St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.

  • Sorry, I'd already left the church by then so didn't pay much attention to the nonsense that was going on.  I had a family to raise & try to get to heaven.
Personally I think that he knew that these clueless wonders were idolizing him & knew that that was wrong & he was giggling & giving it right back at 'em.
Yes, the church had already started her Passion way back then.  This was when our priest had replaced the gold chalice with a glass one and I left & never looked back.

  •

What is a Catholic supposed to say after watching that?

I did this the entire 7 minutes:

He sounded like he was moo-ing.
For there shall arise false Christs and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders, insomuch as to deceive (if possible) even the elect. (Matthew 24:24)

The first bishop to come up to the microphone is the late Bishop McGann of the Diocese of Rockville Center, New York. He is the only one I recognize.

The behavior of the audience is reminiscent of watching a roomful of adolescent females when their teeny-bop stars appear in a room whether on screen or in person. They are out of control and neither the adults or rock idols (ahem) put a stop to it. In this case the star seemed to love the adulation. Yep, it looks like entertainment.

  • This needs to spread to the santo subito groupies - but they'll have some rationale for it.

A friend though it could be a sign of possession.
