I personally do not think it is more realistic. I believe part of whats so wrong with it is that it took away from Christ's strenth. Made him look weak, when this was not the case.
Also, I don't believe he was hanging that way. His arms were totally out to either side. His knees were not bent all the way down like that. He had to stand on His Feet to breathe and it was severely painful since the nails in His Feet were impaled in them.
I've always hated that "crucifix."
And again, not to belabor the point, but I believe that "crucifix" might have been an invention of the Freemasons. It adds to what you've pointed out about taking away from Christ's strength.
