  • Pope Francis said recently that he has ordered the opening of the Vatican Archives to shed light on the Church’s actions during the Argentine military dictatorship (1976-83), according to an Argentine media report.

Angela Boitano, president of the Argentine Association of Relatives of the Disappeared, met recently with Pope Francis. She said that the Pontiff also told her that a criticism of the Argentine hierarchy’s actions during the dictatorship is also being prepared.

The Pope served as the Jesuit superior in Argentina from 1973 to 1979.

We know that the guilty will pay for their sins. The only question is when?

  • Whenever a government agency, be it a secular government or a church government, publicly declares that it is "opening an investigation", I always get the impression that the results of the "investigation" are pre-determined.

My question, because the title of this topic and the opening post seem to say two different things, is:

Is the Vatican opening an investigation or are they making the archives available to those who wish to investigate?

  • Well, the only investigation we REALLY need is into the orthodoxy of one Jorge Bergoglio.

  • What exactly happened in Argentine during those years?  Were bloodthirsty revolutionaries running through the streets killing people at will?

Can anyone give me a quick run down on what went down in Argentina during the years 1976-1983?
