@15:20: Card. Burke says Francis's apostolic exhortation is "a text that's not altogether easy to interpret."

Interview begins @8:59:

Unlike Bp. Fellay, Card. Burke is at least consistent.

  • This does not give me hope.
If any one saith, that the ceremonies, vestments, and outward signs, which the Catholic Church makes use of in the celebration of masses, are incentives to impiety, rather than offices of piety; let him be anathema. - Council of Trent

What about it doesn't? He realizes Francis's "apostolic exhortation" is "a text that's not altogether easy to interpret."

Because he's not making a judgment one way or the other.  This comment lets him go along to get along.  Cardinal Burke was someone I thought could possibly do the right thing.  This lukewarm response leaves much to be desired.

Oh, you wanted him to judge on the part where he says the Old Covenant is still valid for the Jews?

I thought it was a good start for him at least to recognize the "apostolic constitution" is not a doctrinal or dogmatic document and that it's confusing.

Oremus that as "Supreme Justice" he may judge well and manfully.

Well maybe I'm seeing the glass half empty.  Maybe it is a first good step for him.

Yes, indeed. Never has he criticized a pope-claimant this much. Deo gratias.

  • And what was the response? Francis removed him from the Congregation of Bishops.
