Indulters don't care about Abstinence - even on Ash Wednesday?

  • My wife told me about a Facebook post she saw, where a known Indult couple ("Latin Mass Catholic") posted all about the lovely Valentines Day meal they were eating at a restaurant -- including steak.

This wasn't a regular Facebook post either, but one of those temporary-life, "Snapchat" esque posts called "stories" which only exist for a day, then they automatically disappear. It was posted on Ash Wednesday/Valentine's Day.

I hope there was some mistake, because I can't believe it. How could a Catholic serious enough to attend the Latin Mass just totally throw off one of the TWO DAYS that even the NOVUS ORDO says you have to abstain from meat on?

Are things THAT BAD in the Indult? I'll honestly say I was surprised.
    Want to say "thank you"?

  • Many just assume that if it falls on a “Holiday” that rules on anbstinence don’t apply.

It’s absurd, but it’s a pretty prevalent mindset.
Religion clean and undefiled before God and the Father, is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their tribulation: and to keep one's self unspotted from this world.

  • Only other thing I can think of is that some clown bishop dispensed them on account of St. Valentine's Day.

Do you know which diocese they were in?

Correction:  One of two days when FASTING and abstinence is obligatory for the Novus Ordo. They oblige abstinence on the Fridays of Lent as well. But that's it for the whole year.

  • I once messed up on Ash Wednesday, and I didn't have Valentine's Day as an excuse.  So, I'm going to go with they made a mistake.

  • Considering almost all the Novus Ordo Bishops let you eat meat when St. Patrick's day fall on a Friday in lent, it wouldn't be surprising that they have a dispensation for Valentines day on Ash Wednesday.

  • They don't believe anyone goes to hell anyway, so what do they have to worry about if they break the rules of fast and abstinence? When they die, the priest will say at their funeral that they went to heaven, and the liturgy will express that as well.

  • There are plenty of meatless meals they could have eaten.  (Maybe they forgot it was Ash Wednesday.)

Maybe they moved Ash Wednesday to Ash Sunday?

Even the Sspx and other trad chapels have Ash Sunday.

If Ash Wednesday was moved to Ash Sunday, then people thought it was ok to eat steak on St Valentines Day on Wednesday and no meat for Sunday.
May God bless you and keep you

  • As someone who goes to the FSSP fairly regularly now, I can assure you that that isn’t the attitude of most ( if any) regular parishioners where I am. ( though I’m unsure if you guys would consider the FSSP as “Indulters” or not.) There are good and bad folks everywhere. I’ve known people in much more supposedly Traditional groups who are very nominal

  • My ICKSP friend was given a dispensation by his Priest to eat meat on the Valentines due to this commitment being a dinner party booked in months in advanced by bunch of non Catholics (was work related).

Is a Priest even allowed to give a dispensation? Even then the modernist US bishops said to have your valentines dinner during Fat Tuesday!

Couldn’t he just eat no meat?  If you are vegetarian, they will make a special meal.

I know a 7day Adventist who brings his own food.

Apparently he just needed his meat :jester:

shame really. I do know the SSPX do give out dispensations for not eating meat on Ash Wednesday aswell

Do Sede Priests give out dispensations or is it rare to do so?

  • Never underestimate how poor catechesis has been these past 50 years.  And old habits are hard to kick.
