Christian Thouvenot, the secretary general of SSPX reportedly said that this choice would inevitably cause them to separate from Williamson.

Earlier this week, his previous defense lawyer unexpectedly pulled out of the case, indicating that this was due to Williamson's choice of a new lawyer.

I think that means that the old lawyer was fired, doesn't it?  I don't think just yet that we can not take the Secretary' General's alleged comment as gospel.  After all, this is a Jewish news agency report.  They're hoping for a big split, I imagine.  But, to tell you the truth, I wouldn't much care if it occurred.

I agree with you about the lack of credibility of the comments.  I think it would be a shame if such a split occurred, but what has Bishop Williamson role in the SSPX been since early 2009?  I hope Bishop Williamson, with more prudence, will be able to continue to act as a missionary and rally priests to his side.  He should be wary of the things that got him into trouble, and try to organize a circle of priests who will be new leadership for traditionalists.

  • As one of Lefebvre's chosen, he needs to be active in the trad world and not become a prisoner of Fellay's vindictiveness and ambitions. A split would be a good thing, pushing people off the fence, and polarise the messy SSPX position on many issues. The Fellay party can shuffle off to become the leading player in the ED niche in the conciliar pantheon  .... and true trads can regroup under an uncompromising banner working against Roman perfidy. Such an opportunity is needed to break the stagnation of two decades post-ABL.

    COMMUNIQUÉ DE LA MAISON GENERALICE
     20-11-2010

The SSPX in Germany issued a statement saying its leader, Bishop Bernard Fellay "has expressly ordered Bishop Williamson to withdraw this decision (to hire the lawyer) and not let himself be used by political theses that have absolutely nothing to do with his tasks as a Catholic bishop in the service of the society."

It said the lawyer "openly maintained links to the neo-Nazi movement in Germany and similar groups."

Williamson and three other bishops, including Fellay, were excommunicated in 1988 when they accepted ordination from the SSPX's rebel founder, Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, despite the Vatican's clearly expressed opposition.

They were readmitted in January 2009 after Fellay wrote to the Vatican pledging they accepted the pope as head of the Church.

Benedict said in a new book, Light of the World, that Williamson was "never Catholic in the proper sense" because he converted from Anglicanism to the SSPX. "That means that he has never lived in the great Church" under papal authority, he said.

  • Bishop Williamson is an old man.  I hope he has chosen successors who will prudently and wisely reconstitute the Traditional movement.

  • It seems as if so much is happening right now, maybe the purification  of the world is upon us.

I tentativelly agree, though with an amount of trepidation.  No doubt about the post-ABL "stagnation," however.  The SSPX is going to seed.

  • Keep in mind that this is happening WHILE the world economy is coming apart at the seams. That much is certain. But even worse, WW3 COULD be starting with China as we speak -- this is ominous news indeed.

  • It's all pretty official at this point, coming as a press release, directly from the horse's mouth.  We are now, it appears, forced to take sides.  SSPX will never be the same hereafter.

  • I wonder what the motivation is here?  Perhaps the society is trying to insist Williamson takes a lawyer who represents him as having abandoned his position?

To me it seems there are far better reasons to be expelled.

Wow, whats wrong with this picture?
The SSPX  bishops  should be supporting Bishop Williamson, I guess if you want a corner spot in the New Church, you have to agree with Benedict  who is cozying up with the  crucifiers of Christ.  "Either you are with me or against me".
In the days to come we will all be tested.
Someone once said "If you were on trial  for being a Catholic, would there be enough evidence  to convict you?"

  • Emerentiana I agree with you. I really do like Bishop Richard Williamson. And, it has always saddened me to see how they threw him under the bus.
