  • I was reading about Pope Francis/Bergoglio's funeral this evening and it was the first time I have really heard of Cardinal Re (he officiated for the funeral).

I remember thinking when John Paul II died and Ratzinger officiated for his funeral that "maybe he will be the next one elected" (granted I was still novus ordo at the time).  It made me think about the possibility of Cardinal Re being elected.

Reading about his life and involvement with the SSPX...  I thought that it would make an interesting thread discussing what the repercussions might be if Cardinal Re was elected in the coming conclave.

Would the SSPX finally have "their pope" and officially "be joined to Rome"?

  • But he is 91. His Wiki page said that he was born in 1934.  He might be behind the lifting of the excommunication of Bp. Williamson?  But I doubt that he will stand against the NWO if he gets in.  At least we know he is a priest, ordained in '57.

  • If the conclave simply couldn't come to a decision, and were divided into warring camps, selecting a very elderly Cardinal who, quite frankly, wouldn't be expected to live that long, might be a way to break the impasse.  That would just kick the can down the road, but would allow them to elect someone and move on.

    It's not impossible.

  • He would be by far the eldest elected.  Benedict XVI was 78 when elected, and I think he was the eldest.

  • Maybe he would be able to get into the papacy and dispose of all the non-Catholics to set it up for the next conclave to pick a pope that would restore the church.  (I know wishful thinking):cowboy:

    Not a bad thought.

As I said, it's far from impossible that the conclave would deadlock (translated: a majority of something shy of two-thirds would go for Tagle or Parolin, but a halfway-orthodox minority, enough to block it, would keep voting and voting against the majority), and they might just throw up their hands and say "okay, we have to elect someone, let's elect a Pope who will probably only be in there for a year or two, and get this thing over with for right now, then we can all come back after he dies and finish the job".

  • Not wishing to put a damper on this but I very much doubt if Cardinal Re is personally interested in the SSPX.  Surely, as he was, then, Prefect of the Congregation of Bishops the lifting of the excommunication was just his doing what Benedict instructed him?   I do not see anything to suggest he has sympathy with Traditionalist causes.
