Why Speak with Rome Today?
The following lines written by René Berthod, a Swiss friend of SSPX is Fr. Gleize who was prominent during the theological debates of 2010-2012. They were written on that occasion, yet, they have lost none of their opportunity in a time when many Traditionalists question the talks over a Prelature which are taking place between Bishop Fellay and the Roman authorities.
Last Monday, the delegation of the Society of St. Pius X met the interlocutors designated to conduct meetings about their religious differences. If it is legitimate to rejoice about it, it is necessary to avoid taking our dreams for reality. Patience!
My letter is addressed neither to a hardened modern mind distraught about this circuмstance, nor to the sectarian traditionalist who finds joy in his isolation. It is addressed to men of good will in order to clarify the true stakes of the dialogue taking place.
You, the obedient parishioners who suffer for seeing these brothers frequent other chapels and carry the witness of their faith at the feet of altars facing God, you need not believe that Écône is running after some Pontifical accreditation which would allow some cohabitation. To you, balanced and reasonable traditionalistswhoaspire tothatunitywhichyour priests daily pray for in the Canon of the Mass, need we remind you that Écône (SSPX French speaking seminary) is the Church visibly maintained in its unchanged faith, its faithful teaching and its perennial prayer?
The Society of St. Pius X does not need to negotiate a recognition which would save it from some alleged schism. It has the immense honor, after having been excluded for forty years, to bear witness of the Catholic faith in the Vatican.
Would, then, Rome have to convert? Should I affirm this seeming enormity which so many among you dare not evoke without indignation? If you want, let us not argue the point, there is no room for it here. But let us choose together this invocation from the Vespers of All Saints:
Auferte gentem perfidam credentium de finibus- “Chase the impious people from the midst of the believers.”"
