  • How could he breathe drowned in all that "tradition"?

He looks like he's thinking "This is just not my milieu! Help! Get me outta here".

One of the things a "bishop of Rome" is bound to be faced with.
Help of Christians, guard our land from assault or inward stain,
Let it be what God has planned, His new Eden where You reign.

  • I had to laugh at the astonished look on his face!

Can you imagine this happening to Pius XII?

Nah! Only dressed up girls. Nuns don't act like that. Nuns have dignity and are reserved in the presence of men, for safety's sake, you know...

From the looks of thos epictures it looks like Pope Francis was in need of some safety.

  • Fruits of the "rock star" attitude towards the Papacy that was fostered by JP2.

These people swoon in the presence of celebrity, as if it were The Beetles or something, but ask the same people if they submit to the Magisterium and they'll rant about how they reject 90% of what the Church teaches.

I had the misfortune of being present at a couple Wednesday audiences in Rome with John Paul II, and these idiotic chants reminiscent of stuff you'd see at soccer games were constantly breaking out.

    "Woo hoo woo"

I was present for a Wednesday audience in Rome in 2007 and was subjected to another version of just what you're describing: "Ole! Ole ole ole! Benedicto! Benedicto!" Some - like Poche, probably - would laud this kind of behavior as simple, "humble" folksy piety or whatever. But I don't. I think it's petty, maudlin and far beneath the dignity due the Vicar of Christ. But this is par for the course in Conciliardom. Case in point, when I went to St. Patrick's Cathedral a few years ago to venerate the relics of St. John Bosco, I had to endure the loud, disruptive, and absurdly undignified strains of a full Mariachi band (in full dress) "serenading" Don Bosco with music fit for a burrito lunch, not veneration of sacred relics in a Catholic cathedral.

Benedict XVI did not foster this kind of rock star cult of personality nonsense the way his immediate predecessor and successor have, but this was probably due more to his own temperment than anything else. And, as in the case of many other abuses that he himself did not foster with particular egregiousness, he also did nothing to put a permanent stop to it.

  • Decades ago now, when we were still in the NO, my parents went to "Adoration"; they arrived to find someone playing rock music for "mood" in the chapel.  So my gruff old Hungarian Dad walked out, went into the sacristy, and demanded to know of the priest, "Who's the bloody idiot who allowed this music?" (said with a very thick Hungarian accent), knowing full well that it was the very priest he was addressing.  He also would sit in the front row for Mass every Sunday.  And the priest would always walk down to shake hands with people during the "Sign of Peace".  My Dad would refuse and would respond, "May God have mercy on your soul."  He would constantly go up to the Pastor and ask him "When are you planning on retiring, Father?"  When a Eucharistic Minister showed up to distribute on his side of the aisle, he would cut all the way across to the other side and completely foul up the logistics, blocking people on the other side, so he could receive Communion from a priest.  He was a real character and a thorn in their side.

    God bless him.

Reminds me of anecdotes I've read by JRR Tolkien's grandson, who remembered his grandfather loudly, angrily making the Traditional Latin responses when the NO was introduced in England.

Professor Tolkien died in 1973, so he was mercifully spared having to endure the NO for very long.
