Pope Francis' First Encyclical To Be Released on Friday
"Lumen Fidei" (The Light of Faith) Will Reflect On Several Themes in the Year of Faith

    Vatican City, July 01, 2013 (Zenit.org) Junno Arocho Esteves | 1202 hits

Pope Francis’ first encyclical, “Lumen Fidei” (The Light of Faith), is set to be published this Friday and will be presented during a press conference at the Holy See Press Office.

Cardinal Marc Ouellet, prefect of the Congregation of Bishops, will present the encyclical along with Archbishop Gerhard Ludwig Müller, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and Archbishop Rino Fisichella, President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization.

Earlier this month, Pope Francis revealed the completion of the encyclical for the Year of Faith during a meeting with members of the XIII Ordinary Council of the General Secretariat of the Synod of Bishops. Stating that it was the work of “four hands”, the Holy Father told the bishops that Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI had handed over his draft of the encyclical which deals with several themes on faith.

Among the themes are the nature of ecclesial collegiality and the synodal structure in the service of the Church's universal mission and in cooperation with the Petrine ministry, the crisis of the family, care for the created order, and the recovery of a whole and wholesome understanding of human being.

“It is an extremely powerful docuмent,” Pope Francis said on June 13th. “The majority of the work was done by him [Benedict XVI].”

Pope Francis also revealed that he would be working on an exhortation on the evangelization that references last year’s Synod of Bishops on the New Evangelization for the Transmission of the Faith.

“I felt that the Year of Faith would end without a good docuмent that can help us,” the Pope said.  “And so I thought this: an exhortation on the evangelization that references the Synod. It can be taken from the Synod but with a much broader framework. I liked the idea and I will go down this path. I have written something and in August, where I will be more relaxed at home, I can [continue writing] and go forward.”
This encyclical could be very good, especially if it clears up erroneous interpretations of collegiality and "synods." Perhaps it'll clear up the nature of the Vatican II "synod" (as it was termed a "Holy Synod" in the Preparatory Commissions' schemas).

  • Considering that he refers to himself as the "Bishop of Rome", I suspect he will be supportive of collegiality.

Prediction:  Absolutely NOTHING will be "cleared up" by this encyclical.  In fact, Conciliarists will be even more confused while the conservatives and liberals both claim victory because, they will both declare, the "pope" agreed with them!

However, it will say a lot about "global warming" and the need for governments to increase taxes to combat it (though it may say so indirectly).  N.B.:  "Among the themes are...care for the created order...."

  • We should have a contest where we guess how many heresies are in the encyclical and whoever guesses the closest wins a prize.

  • Oh no...not another "encyclical" from a NO "pope".  And I thought he'd stick with the whole "bishop of rome" thing and stay quiet.

  • The best use of his encyclical would be to print it on soft comfortable absorbent paper. Then spin it on to rolls. You guessed it, then put it in every toilet, in every parish across the world. That way, every Catholic can say they were inspired by this great work!

I don't know how many heresies there will be, but I assure you there will be numerous quotes along the lines of, "The Second Vatican Council teaches..." and "According to the Second Vatican Council..." I also know of a few words that absolutely will not be referenced: "Pope," "papacy," "Vicar of Christ," and "One True Church."
"This principle is most certain: The non-Christian cannot in any way be Pope. The reason for this is that he cannot be head of what he is not a member. Now, he who is not a Christian is not a member of the Church, and a manifest heretic is not a Christian, as is clearly taught by St. Cyprian, St. Athanasius, St. Augustine, St. Jerome, and others. Therefore, the manifest heretic cannot be Pope." -- St. Robert Bellarmine

  • Apparently it's an encyclical written by His Retiredness, His Humbleness is just signing his name to it.
"Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

  • Another useless encyclical which will be interpreted and reviewed as being a monumental step forward for the Catholic Church.

It comes at a good time too. To take some focus away from the scandals in the church.

Yes, it'll probably just self-referentially cite Vatican II.

It's crazy people think Dominus Iesus, e.g., cleared up Vatcian II's subsistit in issue!

  • Well, here it is.

"Never will anyone who says his Rosary every day become a formal heretic ... This is a statement I would sign in my blood." St. Montfort, Secret of the Rosary. I support the FSSP, the SSPX and other priests who work for the restoration of doctrinal orthodoxy and liturgical orthopraxis in the Church. I accept Vatican II if interpreted in the light of Tradition and canonisations as an infallible declaration that a person is in Heaven. Sedevacantism is schismatic and Ecclesiavacantism is heretical.
