We attended Mass at Swiss Pines and later Phoenixville, PA for 2 years (1986-1988?) where the Carmelites came after the property was donated to the SSPX. Fr. Wards use to come occasionally. I always remember him for his long consecration. According to Mr. Ho, the sacristan, it was due to scruples and kept repeating the prayers over and over. Never saw him after that time.
I used to be one of his altar servers, back then he never ever repeated the prayers, and I don't know about scruples, but when he was a young priest he whispered the words of consecration very, very slowly and distinctly, which definitely did take a lot longer than one would normally expect.
He would say them something like this - "Hic....................est..............enim..............calix................... sán...gui...nis............... me...i" and so on for the entire consecration. From memory, the part I just posted would take him at least 15 to 20 seconds vs the typical priest who would say the same words in about 4 or 5 seconds. Seems like he had like a 6 or 7 second pause between each word.
Some 50 odd years ago he was well liked, we always considered him as one heck of a wise and knowledgeable young priest, and he gave great sermons too. I fondly remember Fr. Ward was always, always running late. I wonder if he still is.
