  • I wasn't sure where to post this so I put it here.
The former head of a suppressed Pennsylvania religious community is now serving as vicar general of a Paraguayan diocese.

In 2005, Bishop Joseph Martino of Scranton suppressed the Society of St. John-- which had been known for its promotion of the extraordinary form of the Mass, but also criticized for reports of lavish spending-- following accusations of sɛҳuąƖ abuse against its founder, Father Carlos Urrutigoity. Bishop Martino’s predecessor, Bishop James Timlin, had suspended the priest’s faculties after a diocesan review board found an abuse allegation credible.

Father Urrutigoity was subsequently incardinated in the Diocese of Ciudad del Este, Paraguay and named a monsignor. The Pocono Record reported that “as of February 2014, Urrutigoity was promoted to vicar general.” A search of the diocesan website, however, found that he has served as vicar general since at least 2012.

Msgr. Urrutigoity is currently the diocese’s first vicar general; another former member of the Society, Msgr. Dominic Carey, is the second vicar general. In 2009, the diocese published a statement defending Msgr. Urrutigoity against “calumnies.”

  • Well done poche. Child rapers must be exposed as what they are and thrown out of the church.

  • I'd like to know how Fr. Urruigoity advanced so high in the church in Paraguay. It just goes to show how high up the corruption in the church goes there. He's not satisfied with molesting american boys now he wants to go after unsuspecting Paraguans. The authorities need to be put on alert there, whatever good it would do. He's left a path of destruction.

  • He advanced that high because the bishop in Paraguay is either indifferent to the sufferings this slug of a priest has inflicted on children or actively supports such evil and wants to give it a nice cushy rectory.  There are no other options.  Disgusting.

  • Bishop Williamson accepted this man into his North American seminary and trained him, ordained him and made him a professor AFTER he had been kicked out of an SSPX seminary in Argentina for suspected ɧoɱosɛҳųαƖity.

My letter left many readers with the same question: How could it be that the SSPX dismissed Carlos Urrutigoity for ɧoɱosɛҳųαƖ behavior from one of its seminaries, but subsequently accepted him into another SSPX seminary, and then ultimately ordained him a priest and even made him a professor there?

I put this same question to Bishop Richard Williamson of the SSPX whom I contacted shortly after I learned that Fr. Urrutigoity had been accused of ɧoɱosɛҳųαƖ behavior as far back as his seminary days in La Reja. Bishop Williamson explained to me that Carlos Urrutigoity had indeed been dismissed from the SSPX seminary in La Reja for ɧoɱosɛҳųαƖ behavior, but that he was received into the SSPX seminary in Winona because the key SSPX authorities in North and South American did not believe the charges against him.

According to Bishop Williamson (and others within the SSPX with whom I spoke), the charges against then seminarian Urrutigoity were not believed because of a deep division that was then taking place within the SSPX district in South America. Fr. Andres Morello, the rector of the SSPX seminary in La Reja, was the head of the sedevacantist group. The District Superior, then Fr. Alfonso de Galarreta, led the opposing group. The division was apparently so intense that the two factions avoided each other. As a result, the SSPX authorities-other than Fr. Morello-were willing to believe that the charges of ɧoɱosɛҳųαƖ behavior made against seminarian Urrutigoity were trumped up. Urrutigoity himself claimed that he was being persecuted and slandered because of his stance against Fr. Morello's group.

I get the impression that the bishop believed that the accusations against him were false.

  • I was there when Carlos Urrutigoity was a seminarian.  Even if admitted into the SSPX seminary at Winona, he should have been watched like a hawk.  He actually built a cult following around himself and was forming strong "particular friendships", all of which should have been alarm bells given the accusations against him.

I know someone who was kicked out of the seminary for raising questions against then Father Urrutigoity for being a modernist (which he was).  So much influence did he have there.

  • I have to admit between this thread and the one on Fr Rizzo, have really left me scratching my head in regards to the SSPX.  It seems that not all is sunshine and roses even in the vaunted bastion of tradition the Society of St Pius X.  That said, the half dozen or so SSPX priests I have managed to meet so far in person, along with +Tissier, have left me with a favorable impression.  They seem to me pretty solid.  Well whatever, yet more head scratching for me in this time of crisis :confused1:

It may be that he is simply an idiot, then.   He is a bishop, after all.  I think it is much more likely that he ignored the truth, becasue he was in sympathy with Urrutigoity's ɧoɱosɛҳųαƖ activity and necessarily connected heresy (bad enough) or his child rape (much worse).  In any event, he is unworthy of his miter

So he wasn't watched like a hawk then by those with the power to do so?

  • The Diocese of Scranton has issued a statement lamenting a Paraguayan diocese’s decision to allow the incardination of a priest accused of sɛҳuąƖ abuse.

In 2005, Bishop Joseph Martino, now retired, suppressed the Society of St.

Father Urrutigoity was subsequently incardinated in the Diocese of Ciudad del Este, Paraguay, named a monsignor, and appointed diocesan vicar general.

The Diocese of Scranton “reported its serious concerns about this cleric to appropriate church officials, including Bishop Rogelio Livieres, Bishop of the Diocese of Ciudad del Este, Paraguay; the Apostolic Nuncio to Paraguay; and the Apostolic Nuncio to the United States,” the diocese said in its statement.

“In every instance, Bishop Martino clearly expressed his reservations concerning Father Urrutigoity, who was identified as posing a serious threat to young people,” the statement added. “Bishop Martino also carefully and consistently expressed his grave doubts about this cleric’s suitability for priestly ministry and cautioned the Bishop of the Diocese of Ciudad del Este, Paraguay to not allow Father Urrutigoity to incardinate into his diocese. Despite these serious cautions, Bishop Rogelio Livieres informed the Diocese of Scranton that he was allowing Father Urrutigoity to incardinate into his Paraguay diocese.”

  • A friend of mine recently spoke over the phone with Fr. Morrello about this Uttigoity situation. Fr. Morrello had written a paper or thesis on sedevacantim it was approved by his superiors at the time . He said he's not sede, but that was the excuse used to keep his evidence from exposing or damaging uttigoity s staying in his position.
Bishop Williamson sided with Uttigoity instead of Fr. Morrello. Fr. Morrello had nothing to gain except telling the truth. Look at the damage that has been done because of slandering Fr. Morrello, and allowing a ɧoɱosɛҳųαƖ to continually cavort himself throughout the church endangering countless souls.

  • I wonder how the people who defend the virtual indefectability of Bishop Williamson will react to this.  Anyone can make a mistake, and His Lordship may be painfully aware of it and sorry for this one, but some of his more devoted followers may still be very unhappy.
