  • This question is directed to SSPX faithful. (It does not concern sedevacantists, since they begin from totally different assumptions.)

Do you think that the SSPX will be forced to accept not only the validity but also the legitimacy -- the essential Catholicity -- of the New Mass? I ask this question because of a rather startling comment made by Fr. Franz Schmidberger during an interview with the German Catholic News Agency (KNA):

    Quote
KNA: Frankly, do you believe that the old and new rites can continue to coexist over the long term?

Schmidberger: Well we will have to see how things develop. There are profound differences between the two rites; for example, the direction of the celebration. The old rite is God-centered. The new is man-centered. Many of the gestures, symbols, and rituals have been fundamentally changed. Today the old rite is like a solid rock amidst the pounding surf, that must remain unchanged. The new rite requires radical reworking so that the sacrificial nature is once again explicitly expressed.

That last line sounds like "reform of the reform" language to me. Do you agree? As I understand it, the SSPX position has always been that the New Mass is gravely deficient and essentially un-Catholic in the Editio Typica, not merely in its bad translations and abusive interpretations.

Perhaps Fr. Schmidberger means that the typical edition of the New Mass should be revised until it becomes essentially the 1962 Missal. In that case, the Novus Ordo effectively ceases to be. Maybe that's the point.
Exile in Novus Ordo land ... please pray for me!

  • But Archbishop Lefebvre said that Vatican II was a schismatic council, and that the Novus Ordo was illegitimate and that so are their priests and seminaries,
