  • I just noticed something, and I thought I would share it:

    Quote
Not to oppose error is to approve it; and not to defend truth is to suppress it, and, indeed, to neglect to confound evil men - when we can do it - is no less a sin than to encourage them

Everywhere you look online people attribute this quote to Pope Felix III, not only do they not provide a source, but it was not worded as such and it was not even him!

Quote from: Pope Innocent IV at the First Council of Lyons of AD 1245
To be unwilling to disquiet evildoers is none other than to encourage them; he who fails to oppose a manifest crime is not without a touch of secret complicity
    - Tanner, Vol. 1, Pt 13, p. 300

What other errors are being willingly and carelessly embraced by the masses I wonder?

  • Isn't it possible they both said something to the same effect?

I know of another Pope who describes what Felix and/or Innocent is describing and calls it "obsequious silence."
Readers: Please IGNORE all my postings here. I was a recent convert and fell into errors, even heresy for which hopefully my ignorance excuses. These include rejecting the "rhythm method," rejecting the idea of "implicit faith," and being brieflfy quasi-Jansenist. I also posted occasions of sins and links to occasions of sin, not understanding the concept much at the time, so do not follow my links.

  • Quite possibly, although if Pope Felix III actually said this, the docuмent wherein it's recorded seems to have vanished, at least from the internet - although I'm sure he didn't think to upload it after he promulgated it.
