The question is can someone, without any reference to his religion, in certain peculiar circuмstances, be joined to the church without yet being a public member of the church. I think the answer can be affirmative without denying the dogma. Obviously this possibility can be exploited, abused or misrepresented, but that doesn't change the fact that it's still a possibility. 

I vaguely recall a story where a man converted to the faith. His mother did not and she died in her false religion. He was distraught for years until he was given a message from a saint I can't recall. The saint was granted the grace to see her interior disposition. It turned out that she did in fact convert through a wholly interior process. 

Make of it what you will but like I said, the mere possibility leaves the dogma intact.

Pope Pius 12 taught that only those who are baptised and profess the true faith are members of the Church...

And yet you cannot deny that you the only time this became an issue was in the 20th century.

Intelligent and discerning people will keep their own counsel, and not that of those who shout the loudest on the internet.

Fr. Michael Müller defended EENS at length against heretical "Catholic" clergy in America in the 19th century. He was silenced by his superiors, no longer allowed to respond, and the heretics were allowed to publicly denounce him and the Catholic Dogma with zero repercussions. It's strikingly similar to Fr. Leonard's case

The standard mantra against the dogma is that ignorance is salvific, sadly it seems that nearly the whole Catholic world embraces this error as if this is the dogma - meanwhile they reject the actual dogma and condemn as heretics those who adhere to it:

"Therefore, no one will be saved who, knowing the Church to have been divinely established by Christ, nevertheless refuses to submit to the Church or withholds obedience from the Roman Pontiff, the Vicar of Christ on earth." - Take from the Letter from the Holy Office, & Excommunication of Father Feeney

Baltimore catechism:
168. How can persons who are not members of the Catholic Church be saved?

Persons who are not members of the Catholic Church can be saved if, through no fault of their own, they do not know that the Catholic Church is the true Church, but they love God and try to do His will, for in this way they are connected with the Church by desire.
