  • Look at the sign the next time you pass a motel.  It will say "Vacancy" or "No Vacancy", meaning they either have or do not have rooms that are empty -- i.e., no guest presently occupies them.

  • Here is a link to the various translations of the english word empty to the latin. No matter how much  :wine-drinking: or :smoke-pot: I had last night nor any amount of sophistry by anyone else will not change the fact that the latin vacante does not mean empty and the english empty does not mean vacante!!!

  • Please note again the sophistry of CM( what is he doing in the Crisis section?) as he uses vacans-- which is not the word in dispute here.

  • It's not in that particular dictionary, but you don't seem to understand Latin.  Latin words are made up of roots and suffixes, the suffix changing such things as the tense or subject.  It does not effect the basic meaning of the word.

All you had to do was go to the same site and look for vacante instead of empty (click on Whitaker's Words first to be able to input Latin).

  • roscoe,

You would be wise to let this one go...as you have been most soundly refuted.

  • Now we are told that the word vacante is not in the dictionary sourced(sorced) by CM. I don't believe it.

The reason we are not being treated to a definition of vacante from CM's dictionary is because it does not say empty.

  • roscoe,

You clearly do not realize it, but you are only making yourself look even more ignorant.  Trust me -- you have LOST this one.

  • My apologies to CM as I did find a Charleton Lewis Latin dictionary on line and vacante does not seem to be there-- kind of an oversight. At any rate, no definition of vacante meaning empty has been sourced-- only sorced.
