Eastern Orthodox sympathies for the Tridentine Mass?

  • I have been speaking to many Eastern Orthodox, and they say that one requirement they would have for a unification between Rome and them is for Rome to restore the Tridentine, and ONLY the Tridentine Mass! Many of them feel the novus ordo is a protestantized travesty, and disgraceful to Our Lord.

Is it possible that they might end up helping us? Modern Rome is so eager for ecuмenism, and for Rome and the Orthodox to be reunited...wouldn't it be something if that ended up being one of the terms?  :roll-laugh1:

  • The ultimate term for the Orthodox is to convert. The only legitimate ecuмenism is the ecuмenism of conversion, of return.

I know...but my point is, wouldn't it be something if one of their requirements for reunion with (novus ordo) Rome would be that the novus ordos return to the one Mass they thought they were through with?

  • It would be, but it would take a humiliated Rome.

Then, given the circuмstances, Rome would have to question herself and hopefully return to the Catholic Faith.

Exactly! I will say that if it turns out like that, it would show that God can use anything and anyone, even schismatics....but what an ironic turn of events it would be!

  • I know a decent number of Orthodox.  They all, to varying degrees, are convinced that the Catholic Church ins in schism and afflicted with heresies.  Much the same ways we view them.  However, all of them think the NO is a mess.  Some of them think none of our sacraments are valid, but, while most do, all think the the TLM is an authentic liturgy that could be practiced by Orthodox while the NO would not be.  They think in terms of us joining them though.
Stir up within Thy Church, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the Spirit with which blessed Josaphat, Thy Martyr and Bishop, was filled, when he laid down his life for his sheep: so that, through his intercession, we too may be moved and strengthen by the same Spir
