  • Please note that he's putting an unsubscribe link at the bottom of his slanderous e-mails. Please make good use of it.

In his latest e-mail, he brags that 97% of his recipients were happy with the e-mail, or at least didn't complain.

(Hey Rob Sheahan -- Maybe they just like a good laugh! At least one "happy recipient" told me so.)

He also gives the proverbial "finger" to mainstream ethical e-mailing practices. He claims that only one-worlders and liberals are against SPAM. Sorry, but what kind of example would it give protestants and non-Catholics if Catholics went around saying SPAM was ok?

The man went to a message board and harvested all the e-mail addresses of its members, without their consent, so he can send out e-mails slandering that board's owner and (he hopes) convince many to join his own new message board.

What man -- whether Catholic, traditional Catholic, protestant, or Buddhist -- would consider that to be moral and ethical behavior? And yet Rob Sheahan justifies such behavior as being completely Catholic!

And St. Anthony Mary Claret wouldn't have used Google Cache to harvest e-mail addresses he wasn't meant to have -- he wouldn't have stolen addresses from a message board without the users' OR the forum owner's permission. Not even under pretext of "helping souls". The ends don't justify the means, Rob. What kind of Catholic are you?

And for those who are so inclined --

There's a free service here, where you can forward his unsolicited mass e-mails. When they get a bunch of complaints, he'll certainly get in trouble.

There are other spam-reporting companies out there as well.

    Thank you,

    Matthew

  • SPAM away, Robbie!  You only HELP the process along, albeit unwittingly.  THANK YOU.

When my membership was active, I knew there were no rules laid out
about emailing those who advertised their email addresses (and, no, I
didn't use the Google cache afterward). Permission was given by those
who advertised. When someone made their email private, it told the
world, "don't email me". When someone left it advertised, it told the
world, "Feel free to contact me about anything Catholic". This means
all the emails I sent were solicited because the email addresses were
given away. Definitively not spam, and it is not stealing to take what
is "given". I mentioned the 97%, not to brag, but to give tangible
evidence that my explanation is true.

My email address was long hidden when he was active, and my email is on his list.

He does have an interesting perspective where reality is concerned.

  • Robert Rawhide wrote that to you by e-mail?

Or did he send out ANOTHER spam?

At any rate, it really shows "what kind of man he is" when he considers the availability of an e-mail address to be an "invitation" for unwelcome slander and rants.

That's like me saying, "your phone number is in the phone book. Therefore you're inviting me to call you about anything interesting -- like the life insurance I'd like to sell you!"

And just like a person's number is in the phone book by default (unless you pay for an unlisted number), CathInfo displayed one's e-mail address by default (up to Nov. 20, 2009 or so).

No, Robert Rawhide is wrong. Joe Public only wants to be contacted if JOE HIMSELF gives you his address, or perhaps a friend of Joe gives you Joe's address. No one likes to be put on mailing lists without their consent.

Ask yourself: how many reputable companies send you e-mail without YOU signing up first? My wife and I get many commercial e-mails -- one for every list we signed up for (to get coupons, freebies, etc.) Every other e-mail we get is either a PERSONAL e-mail, or SPAM. You don't normally get random legitimate e-mails from people you didn't contact first.

And sending a personal e-mail to one or two people is one thing. But harvesting e-mail addresses en masse from a forum, and basically circuмventing the forum software itself to "reach" the entire membership is a whole different deal.

It's the difference between a cold call from a human and a machine calling you.

  • So, according to Robert Rawhide's distorted version of reality, I could purchase a spammer's tool -- an "e-mail harvesting" program -- run it for a while, and then send out mass e-mails advertising ChantCd.com or something, and not be considered a spammer!

And if someone forwards my spam to my ISP, etc. I will just say, "You're a liberal one-worlder. I'm a Catholic -- we don't believe in so-called SPAM. In my religion, we're allowed to contact any human being, you devil.
Besides, the e-mail addresses I collected were posted in plain text on the Internet, or I wouldn't have been able to collect them! So the people were inviting me to send e-mails to them."

Yeah...as if that would really hold water.

  • I sent Robert Rawhide a reply saying I wouldn't mind receiving unsolicited emails, if the person sending them would at least introduce himself (even telemarketers do that). He replied by removing me from his list.

Do you know what that means?

Robert Rawhide was here LONG before he made his formal apperance. Maybe Laurencio gathered your e-mail address?

I hid my email on Mar. 1st. 2009, and Laurencio et al joined in July.
