  • How do you know these pictures were taken in 1970? Maybe the Missal you have is a reprint of the 1970 version and they added these pictures later to this new edition (they weren't in the first edition)? I find it hard to believe that it could have gotten this bad within just one year after Pope Paul VI created the N.O. Mass.

  • Yeah, Belgium was worse than the U.S. I believe they were the ones who were experimenting liturgically before the N.O. was created and they started Communion in the hand even before it was allowed.  A clue - look at the wrong way the people are doing the sign of the cross. They are supposed to have their 3 fingers together (symbolic of the Holy Trinity). I doubt they started doing it all wrong as soon as the N.O. Mass came about.

  • I was actually kind of surprised that it was as "conservative" as it was.  From my mother-in-law who lived through it, it certainly seemed far worse then that by 1970, but perhaps that is specific to certain regions or parishes in the US that were more experimentally inclined then others (i.e. depending on the parish what they could get away with - I'm sure that one could get away with more in San Fran then San Antone at the time).
