FYI someone doesn't have to be a "dyke bishop" to make a stir in this department.
A few short years ago, the County of Los Angeles, California, quietly appropriated a pile of money in multiple millions of dollars to take down all the County Seals and replace them with new ones. It was never put up for vote and the citizens never heard "boo" about it until the program was nearly completed.
The only difference between the old seal and the new one was the following:
On the old seal, a front view of a typical California Mission (there are 21 of them, begun by Fr. -now saint- Junipero Serra, and associates) was topped by a CROSS. This is historically justified by the fact that the very first thing to be erected at a new mission site was the Mission Cross, where the padres said Mass daily, until the Mission was built.
On the new seal, everything is identical EXCEPT the CROSS atop the Mission has been removed.
So don't think it's not a threat or it can't happen. It happened here.
