I saw this on my MSN home page!  This enemy of the Church has reached the judgement seat of God!

ROME (Reuters) - The former archbishop of Milan and papal candidate Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini said the Catholic Church as "200 years out of date" in his final interview before his death, published on Saturday.

..Martini, once favored by Vatican progressives to succeed Pope John Paul II and a prominent voice in the church until his death at the age of 85 on Friday, gave a scathing portrayal of a pompous and bureaucratic church failing to move with the times.

"Our culture has aged, our churches are big and empty and the church bureaucracy rises up, our rituals and our cassocks are pompous," Martini said in the interview published in Italian daily Corriere della Sera.

"The Church must admit its mistakes and begin a radical change, starting from the pope and the bishops. The pedophilia scandals oblige us to take a journey of transformation," he said in the interview.

In the last decade the Church has been accused of failing to fully address a series of child abuse scandals which have undermined its status as a moral arbiter, though it has paid many millions in compensation settlements worldwide.

Martini, famous for comments that the use of condoms could be acceptable in some cases, told interviewers the Church should open up to new kinds of families or risk losing its flock.

"A woman is abandoned by her husband and finds a new companion to look after her and her children. A second love succeeds. If this family is discriminated against, not just the mother will be cut off but also her children."

.In this way "the Church loses the future generation", Martini said in the interview, made a fortnight before he died. The Vatican opposes divorce and forbids contraception in favor of fidelity within marriage and abstinence without.

A liberal voice in the church, Martini's chances of becoming pope were damaged when he revealed he was suffering from a rare form of Parkinson's disease and he retired in 2002.

Pope John Paul II was instead succeeded in 2005 by Pope Benedict XVI, a hero of Catholic conservatives who is known by such critical epithets as "God's rottweiler" because of his stern stand on theological issues.

Martini's final message to Pope Benedict was to begin a shake up of the Catholic church without delay.

"The church is 200 years out of date. Why don't we rouse ourselves? Are we afraid?"

Martini was much loved and thousands paid their respects at his coffin in Milan cathedral on Saturday.

I'll bet I can guess what "new kinds of families" he was talking about. :barf:

  • "The church is 200 years out of date" thunders a pompous newCardinal.  A tired cliche trodded out to a tired reading audience.  Why did he pick the arbitrary number of 200?  Why not 9 years and six months?  LOL!

Why is there no reflection in these guys?  They fail, or their policies cause turmoil, and all they do is clamor for more.  They must see the emotional turmoil and personal destruction that they played a role in.  By promulgating the spirit of vatican II, they removed from the lives of the weak an ark, a protector.  They opened the door and let the wolves in, then watched the devouring, then laughed about it all and started demanding that the church change its ways.  This is the modus operandi of socialist agitators, they make demands.  Then when some demands are met, they howl and demand more, acting like they had never made demands in the first place.

It reminds me of a letter written by Sen Ted Kennedy, it was released to the public posthumously.  I had hoped it was a contrite letter asking forgiveness for leaving Mary Jo Kapuchnik (if that's how her last name is spelled) dead in a car in the cold water back in 1969 but instead it was just some nonsense about how the church needs to lighten up a little.

I guess the old adage that the truly wicked do not repent even at the gates of hell is true.

  • Our "40 years in the wilderness" (50+ in our case) is winding down, for much the same reason God kept the Israelites wandering for 40 years, for the unbelieving generation to die off.

The unbeleiving princes of the Church are slowly but surely dying off.

Uh, yea.......you know exactly what kind of "new" families the good cardinal was talking about.

And we wonder why scandal has rocked the Church these so many years recently with clergy like this in the upper eschelon in the Vatican.

    What a deplorable statement. Yuck.

Every word here is true, but not in his context. Too bad he's got the wrong idea of change in mind.

Yes, the church is losing it's flock... to the gates of hell. Becoming more liberal will only lead more sheep to hell. Iuvenalis is right, the culling has begun. Praise God. I think more souls will be saved that way.

Thankyou, Lord! I'll take Benedict to him anyday!

  • This cardinal also betrayed himself and his thinking as a shallow modernist.

How can something eternal, being of yesterday, today and tomorrow never changing, be out of date?  And if what he said is true and we decided to update everything to 2012...  ....well, what do we do when 2022 comes along?

Pope Pius XII said that what is modern in 1940 is no longer modern in 1960 and this was a rebuke to modernist thinking.

We really should be aloof from the novus ordo and not let this nonsense annoy us.  However, the heresies and stupidities of the novus ordite leadership is good for a lot of laughs.

  • In 1965 Our Lady of Garabandal left a message that many Cardinals,
Bishops, and Priests are on their way to Hell amd taking many souls
    with them.
This late Cardinal, and many others are what are what our Lady
    was talking about.

Is it probably that the now dead cardinal was in his heart of heart's an atheist?

    This goes beyond mere modernism.

Need we the assertions of a dubious and unconfirmed apparition to know what any man bearing eyes and a senses Catholicus may recognize?  Whatever the case, I hope, though I doubt very greatly, that in his last hours Martini was given the grace to recognize his errors and muster the humility to make sufficient contrition to obtain final justification.  If he did not, he has received his just reward for having betrayed so many to their destruction, and for his apparently unceasing blasphemy toward God and His Church.

I pray for his soul, and for the souls of all those that dwell in the darkness of the syncretist heresy.
