Does anyone have a link to this story -- some friends told me they heard it on the news this week.

This would be the second time in a row this happened -- last time with Benedict XVI last year, which was the first time ever, and now, it happened again, for the second time ever.

Does anyone see a pattern here?

Maybe, since this is Rome, they ought to start doing this at the Colosseum, since, you know, Christians to the lions and all that?

I recall the Communion verse for today's Mass of St. Ignatius of Antioch, whom pious legend says was the child who sat on Our Lord's knee when He said to let the children come to me and hinder them not:

"I am the wheat of Christ;  may I be ground by the teeth of beasts, that I may be found pure bread."

Thus he rejoiced when he heard the roars of hungry lions that were to be set loose upon him.  His was among the most glorious of martyrdoms in the early Church.

The doves were mauled by a Seagull and a Crow. This is not a good sign.

I have a friend who interpreted the two predator birds as two signs:

He said that the crow represents scavengers that eat the bodies of the dead;  that eat the bodies of dead people if they're lying out in the open air, exposed to the elements.

He said the seagull represents a WORLDWIDE effect and by extension, the universality of the Church, because seagulls are found in every nation of the world, and their domain is ubiquitous, as is that of truth.

Furthermore, he said that there may be a mistake, that the 'crow' was actually not a crow, but a raven, and ravens are larger birds, scavengers as well, but their numbers have been greatly on the INCREASE in recent years.  He has observed raven populations to have grown three times in just the last two years.  He thinks this is God's way of preparing for the widespread deaths that are soon to come when bodies of people will be left lying outdoors exposed, and the scavenger animals will devour them.

St. Ignatius of Antioch, one of the glorious Martyrs of the Church, whose name appears in the Canon of the Mass, in the Great Invocation, a.k.a. Hanc igitur, was eaten ALIVE by ravenous lions.

Thanks for the link, bowler.  Here is a cute comment from a reader on that page:

Clearly a sign from god that he/she/it is not happy with policies of the catholic church.

Then there are others that are not quite so cute:

Captive bred animal that are released into the wild without extensive training to survive fare very poorly and almost all die, most fairly quickly due to predators, starvation and simply of sheer unfamiliarity with the outdoors. Animals that have grown in cages are unfamiliar with such basic of living in the wild as avoiding predators, foraging and finding safe places to roost and rest. In particular the appalling mortality of doves released during the olympics is the reason that you no longer see the release of birds in the opening ceremonies.

In my area, there are several families who raise white pigeons and train them to be homing pigeons, using ancient tried-and-true methodology;  then they hire out their pigeons for parties and social events like weddings or political campaign speeches or outdoor band performaces like Veterans' Day.  When they open the cages (which can be elaborate devices made to appear like something other than bird cages) their birds fly out to the amazement of the crowd, and then make a Bee-Line directly for home, where an assistant awaits their return.

I asked some about missing birds and they told me they have not had any get lost on the way home.  These are birds with a very powerful instinct to find their way home, and their range is not known, for no matter how far away they are released (within reason) they all fly home immediately, only stopping for rest on rare occasions, as best it can be determined.

The breeders / trainers use white pigeons because people almost always think they are doves, and the doves do not learn to fly home like the pigeons do so well.  It has become very politically correct for them to proudly announce that the birds are not in danger because they are well-trained and reliable to return directly home.

  • The Dove represents the Holy Spirit....I'm glad the doves escaped unharmed or else I would really be worried. Crows and Seagulls are scavengers, what is one to conclude? That the fruit(teaching) from this Pope is rotten or without truth, life and the way to the Father.

  • Perhaps the Seagull was John XXIII and the Crow was JPII.
